Why is a person for whom a
prayer is made when he is sick
referred to as the son or daughter
of his mother instead of the son or
daughter of his father?
are required to verbally proclaim:
“This is the Torah which Moses
placed before us.” Such a procla
mation would be out of order it
they didn’t get to look at the writ
ten side of the scroll
In general, this proclamation is
an expression of faith on the part
of the congregants that the Scroll
contains the word ot the Almighty
and its contents are not simply
man-made.

While in general, when prayers
of blessing are made for a person,
the name of the father is used, in
prayers tor recovery from illness,
the name of the mother is used.
One reason given is that, when a
person is ill, we ask the Almighty for
His mercy.
1 he model of a mother is asso
ciated with mercy and concern,
and thus the mother’s name is used
when asking the Almighty’s mercy
tor the recovery of the sick.
A second reason given is that
there is no doubt as to who is the
mother of a person while the iden
tity of the father is not completely
assured. In praying for recovery,
the one who makes the prayer uses
every eflort to identify the sick per
son as surely as possible. Some
even claim that healing the person
brings relief to the tears and sighs
ol the mother so that his recovery
is also a recovery for her, ridding
her ot her deep concern.

Why is it that, either before or
after the Torah Scroll is publicly
read, it is unrolled, lifted up, and
turned around before being rolled
together again?
IV
I he Sephardic congregations do
this before the scroll is read. The
Ashkenazi congregations do it after
the scroll is read. This practice is
meant to emphasize the belief that
the Torah Scroll is directly related
to each and every person in the
congregation instead of being close
to the reader and far from the
congregants.
As it is lifted up, the congregants
