Cardinal agrees to suspend construction at Auschwitz PARIS (JTA)—Cardinal Fran- ciszek Macharski, the archbishop of Cracow, has reportedly agreed to suspend construction of the Car melite convent being built on the site of the Auschwitz death camp in Poland. The cardinal gave this pledge at a meeting Tuesday in Geneva at tended by high-ranking Catholic leaders and French, Belgian and Italian Jews. While in Israel last week, Ma charski visited Yad Vashem. He said his voluntary decision to freeze the construction work “would show the temporary nature of the con vent.” Some Jewish organizations have responded with anger to the estab lishment of the convent on the site where millions of Jews and non- Jews were exterminated. They claim the convent is an insult to their memory. Western European Jews were irked by the Polish Catholic Church’s fund-raising campaign for the construction in Belgium, France and Italy. A small group of Carmelite nuns established the convent in 1984 when they began living in an unused theater just outside the camp fence. The theater was once used during the Holocaust to store gas cylin ders used to exterminate the inmates and possessions taken from the prisoners The convent sought money to renovate the structure in a fund raising campaign launched last year in Europe. Macharski received per mission from the local authorities to turn the theater into a convent. The Geneva meeting was held behind closed doors and no official communique was issued. The Standard Club R.S.V.P 231-2203 Paid tor by the Wyche Fowler tor the Senate Campaign, and endorsed by the candidate David Obey (D.-Wis.) who recom mended $12.9 billion in foreign aid for the year starting Oct. 1 com pared with the administration’s re quested $15.4 billion. For the cur rent yearthe appropriation is $14.5 billion. The full appropriations committee is to consider the sub committee’s program late in August. The Senate has not yet taken up the program. Israel is earmarked for $1.8 bil lion in military and $1.2 billion in economic assistance and Egypt $1.3 billion in military and $8.5 million in economic aid. These are the same amounts originally voted by Congress for the current year but have been reduced by 4.3 percent under the Gramm-Rudman-Hol- lings budget-reduction law. Israel has voluntarily returned the amount of that percentage cut to the U.S. Treasury. Obey’s proposal also included that Jordan receive “up to $ 15 mil lion” for economic projects on the Israeli-administered West Bank. This sum also was recommended by the Reagan administration along with $117 million in military and $18 million in economic support for Jordan itself. This year Jordan was provided with a total of $92 million, $25 million less than for the coming year. The administra tion asked for an additional $2 mil lion for Lebanon for the coming year. A subcommittee staff member said funds in the neighborhood of $20 million remain on hand for Lebanon from previous appropria tions. r BATHROOMS SHOULDN'T BE BORING /VV :-AA Complete bathroom renovations Plumbing repairs A installation Shower pans replaced MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE -the-mosteF-bcrth- (404)971-8162 MARK 8RESSLER LYNN BRESSLER MASTER PLUMBER JOURNE VMAN PIUMBE R DESIGNER/BUILOER DESIGN SPECIALIST
