Holocaust program thriving at ABJE
The Atlanta Bureau of Jewish
Education Holocaust Education
program, under the umbrella of
Zachor of the Atlanta Jewish
Federation “is thriving beyond
all expectations,” reports Dr.
Leon Spotts, executive director
of the Bureau.
The program, coordinated by
Daliah Brill, has established a
Speakers Bureau comprised of
survivors, children of survivors.
liberators, educators and religious
and secular volunteers through
out the community. Requests for
speakers are received on an on
going basis from civic groups
such as Rotary clubs, schools,
religious institutions and a var
iety of organizations.
A Holocaust study unit was
launched as a pilot program w ith
the Atlanta Public School Sys
tem this past spring. Nine schools
were selected for participation.
The unit was approved by the
Atlanta Board of Education and
evaluated favorably. Teacher
training workshops were spon
sored by the Bureau.
An outreach program for the
church community is being devel
oped in an effort to plan a Holo
caust education program for a
variety of denominations through
out the Greater Atlanta area.
CJF president to deliver keynote
at annual GA Opening Plenary
NEW YORK—In an environ
ment that fosters religious and
political diversity, achieving and
maintaining greater Jew ish unity
and continuity have become a
significant challenge for the
North American Jewish commu
nity. Reflecting and taking up
this challenge, the 55th annual
General Assembly of the Council
of Jewish Federations, to be held
Nov. 12-16 in Chicago, w ill focus
on the theme “Klal Yisrael—
Federation’s Role in Building
Community.”
The General Assembly, the
largest annual gathering of North
American Jewish community
leaders, will feature plenaries,
forums and workshops on the
theme and on a wide range of
topics of broad interest and sig-

The theme will be addressed
directly by CJF President Sho-
shana S. Cardin, who will deliver
the keynote address during the
Opening Plenary on Wednesday
evening, Nov. 12.
On Thursday morning, Nov.
13, Rabbi Harold Schulweis,
scholar-in-residence, will address
a major Symposium Plenary on
the topic “Klal Yisrael—Chal
lenges Facing North American
Jewry in Balancing Unity and
Diversity.” This will be followed
by four concurrent symposiums
designed to explore the theme in
greater depth: “Building the
Federation Agenda in a Climate
of Religious Diversity,” “Politi
cal Differences and Jewish Unity
on Public Social Policy Issues,”
“Achieving a National Consen
sus on Jewish Community Rela
tions Issues” and “Israel-Dias-
pora: Promoting Global Jewish
Unity.”
Also addressing major plenary
sessions will be Vice President
George Bush, Israeli Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres and, via
satellite from Israel. Natan
Shcharansky.
The Jewish youth of Atlanta
have requested additional pro
gramming in this area. BBYO
will host a Holocaust program at
their regional convention and is
working with the Bureau on a
series of recommended programs
for local chapters. Camp Barney
Medintz included a Holocaust
program in its summer experience.
Jewish day school and religious
school educators are working with
Ms. Brill to establish Holocaust
studies in their respective schools.
The Bureau encourages tours
of the Zachor Holocaust Center
in conjunction with educational
programming, and is coordinat
ing programs that include such
tours.
A centralized reference library
of Holocaust related materials—
especially books and multi-media
materials—is planned and the
Bureau requests the support of
local religious institutions, syn
agogues, organizations and indi
viduals in contributing duplicate
books, films and videos or mak
ing a permanent loan of same.

mittee, chaired by Elliot Cohen,
which includes rabbis, educators,
survivors, children of survivors,
Jewish and non-Jewish volunteers
throughout the community over
sees the Holocaust Education
program.

Sidney Kaplan is honoree
at Hebrew Academy event
The tenth annual Hebrew
Academy Dinner of Honor will
be held Sunday evening, Dec. 14,
at the Westin Peachtree Plaza
Hotel.
This year’s honoree will be
Sidney Kaplan, past president of
the Hebrew Academy board of
trustees and past president of the
Hebrew' Academy PTA. He is
president of the Ahavath Achim
Synagogue and serves on numer
ous boards of Jewish and com
munal organizations.
