STUDENT GOVERNMENT AT SPELMAN:
Paulino Brako p
What will student government con
tribute to us at Spelman? I firmly be
lieve that student government will pre
pare us to become better, more responsi
ble citizens in that future which is now.
No longer can we blame others for our im
mature actions and ’unwise choices, for
it is both our privilege and our responsi
bility to make our own decisions* No
longer ean we say that if we were given
the right to help govern ourselves we
would not show such little interest in
school activities* For the day has come
student government is gradually making
its way onto our campus. The success of
this year of trial depends on us. Our
interest in and co-operation with our
student leaders to make our dreams of ^
student government a rea lity, regard
less of how slow and laborious these ef
forts may seem, will determine to a lar^e
extent whether or not student government
will continue next year.
For this reason I want to emphasize
two qualities which I feel are necessary
in every student to make this year a suc
cessful one. These qualities are sound
reasoning and honesty. I have already-
told many of our fellow students not to
become discouraged because so few chang
es have made in those rules and regula
tions which govern the students in the
dormitories and on the campus. To alter
in any way any of the patterns of behav-
ior which hnvo been in existence for

PAVE WE SEEN THE LAST OF THE BLANKET PAY
DANCES ?
Recently the question of the advis
ability of pay dances was brought before
the Student Council. The administration
raised the question because of some ob
servations made at the dance given by
the Sophomore class on October 5th.
1. That there was too much loiter
ing outside of the entrance to the gym.
2. That many of the male guests
had been drinking excessively prior to
their arrival at the dance.
Pay affairs are the only way which
the classes can raise money for the
Thanksgiving Rally and the Fmraderts
Day Rally. If pay dances were stopped,
not only would that put a great strain on
the classes in regard to Thanksgiving and
Founders Day, but it would mean that all
dances would have to be invitational and
that would be a disaster.
This question was taken to the Board
of Review© They devised a system which
is to be tested for the Senior’s Bermuda
Festival which is to be held November 16.
All male guests the .niversity
center are requested to bring identifica
tion cards or library cards. Those Spel
man students who wish to invite guests
not attending schools in the University
center will submit those names by Wednes
day, November 13th, Lets all co-operate
in this experiment. Let the Burmuda
Festival mark the continuance of blanket
pay Dances at Spelman.

Student Government, Con't a
over seventy-five years is going to take
longer than one school term and certain
ly longer than six weeks. How ever,'* Kins t
work patiently and prepare ourselves to
accept compromises.
When I speak of honesty, I mean the
responsibility that we have to see that
every student upholds certain standards
of behavior. Let’s not become offended
when a friend is kind enough to correct
us; and let's not laugh at any student
when she is trying to do what she consi
ders to be right. . to
It will be long and difficult, but
lot’s work to preserve student government
at Spelman.
