by LaRonda I. Morris

Cynthia Elizabeth Jackson, better
known as “CJ.” serves as the senior
class President for the 1980-1981 school
year. C.J. is a biology major from Tinton
Falls, N.J. As President of the senior
class, CJ. has many expectations and
hopes that this class will be a memora
ble one
Throughout the year there are various
activities that have been organized for
the seniors enjoyment. Some of these ac
tivities include a “pizza party for the Big
and Little Sister, the senior pageant,
the continuation of the Centennial
Store, and to celebrate the one hun
dredth birthday of Spelman there
will be a formal Centennial Ball.” These
are just a few of the activities planned to
make this year an enjoyable one for
Centennial Senior
seniors as well as the entire student
body”
When asked what goals she would
like the senior class to accomplish, CJ.
responded, “to instill in those who are
left behind the love that we have for
Spelman and for the student body to
work harmoniously with the ad
ministration and faculty.” Also she
hopes to see this class more interested
in Spelman rather than what they will do
after graduation.
Since so much emphasis has been
and is placed on this class as it being the
one-hundredth graduating class of
Spelman, C.J. would like to convey this
message to her fellow Spelmanites, I
don’t want people to think of us just as
the Centennial ClassJ think the ladies
of our class are dynamic women with a
lot of potential and even if we weren’t
the Centennial Class, the class of 1980
would still be the best Spelman ever
produced.”

As the Centennial school year ge\s
underway, it is necessary to explore the
perspective of a member of the Ceri
tennial class. Suzette Irving, a
psychology major from Thornton, Pen
nsylvania, is a senior here at Spelman
and in the graduating class of 1981.
Suzette first entered Spelman College
in the Fall of 1977. Suzette explains why
she decided to attend Spelman by
saying, “My minister’s wife was from
Atlanta and recommended Spelman as
being one of the leading Black colleges.
She talked very highly of Spelman and
after I visited here, I fell in love with it,”
Suzette, like many seniors at
Spelman, feels the last three years were
rewarding years. Suzette elaborated by
stating, “I’ve enjoyed my last three years
at Spelman, although, I regret the fact I
haven’t taken advantage of all it has to
offer. Spelman and instructors like Dr.
Hendrickson, Dr. Smothers, Dr. Eagleson
and Dr. Carr have prepared me for a
career in psychology and steered me in
the right direction.” Suzette has been im
pressed with the people she’s come to
know while at Spelman and feels the
Spelman woman wants more our of life
and for herself than average woman of
yesterday.
Suzette is highly excited about the
coming Centennial year and hopes to
participate in the many activities spon
sored by the Centennial Committee.

academic opportunities for this year.
Suzette explained by saying, “I also hope
to get involved u. .me counseling ac
tivities. ■ ; really get more involved in
. psychology Socially, though, 1 plan to
live it 'ip,.as 1 would advise any senior in
tlie cias-, ot 1981."
While here at Spelman, Suzette has
participated in a multitude of ex
tracurricular activities. Within the last
three years, Suzette has been an active
member of the Spelman Dance Troup,
Swimming Team and Psychology Club.
Suzette has also been chosen as a
representative for the Alpha Phi Alpha.
Alpha Rho Chapter Homecoming Court
and as the second attendant to Miss
Maroon and White of Morehouse
College.
Upon graduating, Suzette intends to
pursue a graduate degree in Atlanta, but
still remain as active as possible as an
alumni of Spelman. Suzette elaborated
on her alu mnae to give Spelman as
much support as possible because it is
one of the few Black women’s college.”
Though graduation is only months
away. Suzette is concentrating primarily
on making the most of the time left.
Suzette feels the activities planned were
carefully put together. Suzette en
couraged all seniors to participate and
ended by saying, “All students should
take advantage of the plans. It’s im
portant that a majority participate bee
ause to simply put it, the class of ’81 is
doing it all the time.”
