Page 7— NEWS Spelman Spotlight October 13,1980 NEWS BRIEFS SPELMAN STUDENT APPOINTED TO NATIONAL BOARD Kelli J. Merideth, a sophomore chemi cal engineering major from Atlanta, has been named as Spelman’s representa tive to the College Board’s newly esta blished Advisory Panel on Student Con cerns. She officially assumed her position on March 8,1980. The panel is comprised of 15 student representatives who participate on the Board’s national advisory councils and committees. The College Board is a New York based nonprofit educational association of over 2,500 colleges, universities, schools, and associations, which spon sors guidance, admissions, financial aid, and credit and placement programs for students, schools, and colleges. All College Convocation by Karen Burroughs Jr. Reporter On September 11,1980 Spelman Col lege held its annual All College convoca tion in Sisters Chapel Following the introductions, President Stewart Welcomed the students to the first convacation of the year in Sisters ChapeL He told the students of Spel man’s humble beginnings in the base ment of Friendship Baptist Church in 1887, and its gradual rise 37 years later to a full liberal arts college. Stewart emphasized that this id “Spelman’s time to say to the world ‘one hundred years and still going strong’ ” At the end of Dr. Stewart’s speech, Dr. Johnson played the organ recces sional and received a standing ovation from the students. Tyrone Crider Student Leaders Resign The students and faculty of More house College were recently surprised by the resignation of two student leaders. Tyrone Crider, Student Gov ernment Association President and Jerome Walker, Editor-In-Chief of the Maroon Tiger have both announced their resignation. Walker cited a reorganization of prior ities as his reason for the resignation while Cridder cited academic concern. Both resignations became effective in early October. Freshman Service Held At the Morehouse and Spelman Tra ditional Workshop Service held at Friendship Baptist Church on Sept 14, it was plainly evident that the bonds be tween Spelman, Morehouse, and Friend ship Church have grown stronger throughout the years. Dr. Norman Rates, Spelman’s College Minister, was there to lead the church in a prayer. Dr. Donald Stewart was there along with his family, to greet the fresh man and enlighten them in detail about the connection Spelman has with the church. Among the members of the church were many Spelman’s Alumni and some of Spelman faculty. Foreign Students' Affair to be Held On October 19th a welcome reception for all foreign students in Atlanta and members of the community will be hosted by the Atlanta Council for Inter nation Visitors and other Atlanta based agencies. The reception will be held at Colony Square at 4:30 p.m. Welcome ad dresses will be given by Mayor Maynard Jackson and Monica Kaufman. Music and refreshments will be provided SPELMAN COLLEGE FINAL EXAMINATION SCHEDULE FIRST SEMESTER, 1980-81 The Final Examination schedule for the first semester, set for December 15-19, has been released by Mrs. Jeanne Allen, Registrar of Spelman College. Mrs. Allen made the decision during the end of the 1980 school season to release the schedule earlier than usual. The schedule usually does not come out until mid-November, but due to protests from students, it has been released early. “The voice of the students brings action,” said Mrs. Allen. In the past, the November releasing of the schedule has caused numerous problems with both students and faculty in obtaining airplane reservations for the Christmas holidays. Hopefully, this prompt release of the schedule will eliminate most of the problems encountered during the holiday season.
