Spelman Spotlight

A Spelman Woman: Valita Sellers

Ambitious, outgoing and versatile are
three words that describe Valita E)elorre
Sellers, a young lady who is constantly
striving to achieve goals set before her,
able to communicate well with others,
and who is able to adapt well to different
situations.
A native of Hillside, N.J., Valita is a
senior majoring in English with an
emphasis in Mass Communications.
Throughout her college career, she has
been active in campus activities, A.U.
Center activities, as well as city-wide
activities. Stemming from her freshman
year to senior year Valita has been
involved in dormitory events; Jr.
Coordinator of “Maynard for Mayor”;
WCLK newscaster and anchor person;
A.U. Center Newsreel broadcaster;
Spelman Spotlight news editor and
reporter; reporter for the AUC Informer;
President emeritus and member of the
Morehouse-Spelman Coalition of the
Society for Collegiate Journalists; Social-
chairperson for the Junior class 1979-80;
member of Sigma Delta Chi Society for
Professional Journalists; WTBS Channel
17 Intern; a nominee for Who’s Who in
American Colleges and Universities; and
a member and President of Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, Inc., Eta Kappa Chapter.
To coincide with her extensive
background of service around and on
campus, Valita achieved great depths
academically. Valita has been on the
Honor Roll and Dean’s List ever since her
entry to Spelman as a freshman. Carrying
an average of 3.71, Valita has been
selected for various scholarships and
awards to compensate her numerous
academic achievements thus far in her
education.
Aside from the various clubs and
organizations Valita is affiliated with on
and off Spelman’s campus, she is also an
associate producer of a weekly 60-minute
public affairs program aired on WTBS.
As an intern at Channel 17 her
responsibilities are numerous. Valita
describes an average day at the studio
saying. “I must create the segments to be
used on the show which is entitled
“Between the Lines,” contact guest to be
on the show, and do all the research for
the interviews and guest that appear on
the show. Thus far Valita’s guests have
included Dr. Joseph Lowery, Mr. Jerome
Smith. Economist Rev. Martin Luther
King. Sr., Wyche Fowler,and Dr. Robert
Brisbane.
Incorporated with her vast amount of
skills in communications Valita aspires to
become a corporate attorney,
enterpreneur of a major black television
network and several small businesses.
Valita feels that her skills in
communications will eventually aid
people and minority people. She feels that
her skills in communications have been
developed and can only be heightened
which have also aided in her precise
organizational skills. When asked how
she plans to interrelate her
communication skills into her legal

profession, Valita responded. “I feel that
my skills in communications will help me
as an attorney because 1 feel that in
addition to being able to speak and write
well I will also be able to understand
people as they relate in society because I
see law as not merely an intellectual
discipline but mostly a humanitarian
discipline.”
Valita is very interested in the
development of black women. She says,
“black women are an integral part of my
motivation.” I intend to use my legal
knowledge in every possible manner to
aid in the betterment of my people.
specifically in the area of black colleges. I
am eternally indebted to Spelman and
shall always give to her, financially,
professionally, and spiritually.”
Valita feels that the culmination of her
organizational skills has led to her
Presidency of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. She feels the highlight of
her Presidency has been sponsoring the
National President of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority. Inc., Mona Bailey, as a speaker
at Spelman for the other members of
Delta, her fellow Spelman Sisters and the
community as a whole.

You Tiger, You!

If you were ever on Spelman College’s
Campus and were asked, “Do you know
Fernando Daniels?” and answered “No,”
you might find yourself the victim of a lot
of strange looks.
Mr. Daniels is a very well known figure
on this campus. He is a member of Omega
Psi Phi Fraternity and is currently the
Dean of Pledges of the fall line. The
abbreviation for Dean of Pledges is D.P
Some have been known to say the initials
stand for Dean of Pleasure. Who Knows
maybe so. Nevertheless, under his
popular, barking, Q-dog exterior there
exists a very serious-minded young man.
Fernando views himself as an, “average
individual striving to attain the highest.”
He is a faithful, diligent, and hard worker
w ho has a tremendous amount of self-
confidence. He feels that he is the master
of his own destiny and can accomplish
any mission he sets out to achieve.
Fernando is a senior biology and
psychology major at Morehouse College.
A native Georgian from the city of
Augusts, he is interested in entering the
