Spelman Spotlight
December 1980
In celebration of Spelman’s 100th
birthday, the college will present the
Morehouse-Spelman Players in the
plays Antigone Jones and The Reunion
on the Proscenium Stage of the John D.
Rockefeller, Jr. Fine Arts Building on the
Spelman Campus December 8th to
December 12th at 8:00 p.m.
The duel playbill will feature the works
of the Atlanta playwrights: Spelman
faculty member Dr. Arturo Machuca-
Padin author of Antigone Jones and free
lance playwright Alice Lovelace author of
The Reunion. Ms. Lovelace was the first-
prize winner in Spelman’s 1979 one-act
playwrighting contest. In addition to this
award, she also received the Phoenix Arts
and Theatre Company’s Arts Services
Award and the coveted Bronz Jubilee in
Literature award. Her credits include two
books of poetry; the Just Us Theatre
Company Production of her full length
play “In The Year of The Snake” and the
WSB-TV production of a sixty-minute
soap drama “The Philips Saga” which she
co-authored with her husband, Charles
Riley.
Under the direction of Spelman senior
Ms. Rhonda Strawter, The Reunion is
the study of three former classmates who
reflect the fragmentation of women by
their families and society.
The women are portrayed by Vanessa
Bardwell, Spelman Sophomore; Michelle
Vertette Smith, Spelman junior; and
Maria A. Earl, Sophomore.
Antogione Jones, a black perspective
of the Greek play Antigone, is a chess
game in which absolute force is
challenged by pure ideal. As in the classic,
Antigone uses her only weapon, the
strength of her will, to overcome the main
weapon of all dictators — fear. This
version makes clear the similarity
between Antigone and the Freedom
Fighters of our own time, such as the late
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The play's theme points out that one
lone person standing firm for
righteousness can overcome a supposedly
superior force based on greed. This one-
act Afro American Passion Play features
actress and singer Robin Black, a
Spelman junior as Antigone and actor No
One Anthony Thomas Riddle as Cleon.
Riddle is also a playwright. The play is
directed by Dr. Machuca-Padin. All
performances are free to the public. For

campus, December 12th, 13th, and 14th

Spelman’s 100th birthday celebration, the
combined Glee Clubs will offer a program
rich in the sound of tradition.

College Glee Club will sing excerpts of A
Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten
under the direction of Spelman Glee Club
director Dr. Roland Allison.
The program features carols from
around the world including the Galacian
Christmas Carol on the Feast of the Holy
Kings sung by the Spelman-Morehouse
Chorus under the direction of Morehouse
Glee Club director Dr. Wendell P.
Whalam. The Spelman Dancers will
dance to this lively number. Adding
another dimension to the concert, the
Morris Brown College Brass Ensemble
will perform under Dr. Allison’s
direction.
Performing a traditional favorite, the
Morehouse College Glee Club will sing
the African tune Bethlehem (Yoruba)
accompanied by lovely drum beats and
tambourines.

performances, the combined Glee Clubs
are scheduled to perform Sunday,
December 7th in New York City at Avery
Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center.

Clark College was represented by the
ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Soririty, Inc.,
Sigma Chapter as they participated in the
first search conducted by Rev. Arthur

that the body of a small girl who had been

area.
In reference to all black businesses, Mr.
James Paschal stated that, “Once, we
could strongly depend on that fact that we
were black businessmen, in a black
community, with black employees and
that we had the total black support for
that reason. But now, not only black
businesses, but the whole world of
business is competitive in its attempt to
reach all audiences on all levels and ages.”
Mr. Paschal feels that a strong,
determined-to-reach-the-top attitude is
most needed of those entering careers in
business. “One must feel that he is
equipped well enough to compete as well
as endure,” stated Mr. Paschal.
As an example of the endurance and
success of the Paschals’ business, a New
Paschal’s restaurnat was recently opened
in Atlanta’s new Hartsfield Airport. This
restaurant is a joint venture of Paschal’s
and Dobbs-Houses, an enterprise that
controls all retail outlets of the airport.
Committee to Stop Childrens Murders,
also participated in the search to help
solve the case of the missing and
murdered children.
AH in all, the activities of these
organizations have displayed a conscious
effort toward protecting Atlanta’s black
children. As stated by Cobbie Ransom,
“It’s important for us as responsible,
intelligent black students to become
progressively aggressive when and if
problems arise in our community.”
“Dobbs-Houses were offering and we
happened to be the highest bidders so
there we are at the new airport,” said
James Paschal with a proud smile.
From their new venture, the Paschals
have formulated Paschal’s Concessions,
Incorporated, which is a type of food and
beverag supply company that will be
nationally located. Mr. Paschal stated
that, “Hi ere is little similarity in the
structure of the Paschal’s here on Martin
Luther King Drive tot hat of the one at
the airport terminal. It is mainly
composed of snack bars, cocktail
lounges, which seat about 125 peopleand.
of course, the hotel complex.”
Mr. Paschal feels that the main thing
that attracts customers and keeps them
coming hack is “great service, good food,
and the most comfortable atmosphere
possible.”
The success story of the Paschals is very
interesting as well as inspirational to
those interested in business careers orany
type of career.

At Spelman, students expressed similar
comments. Sandra Caster, a sophomore,
stated, “It’s an ego booster for some
women and I personally don’t need it.”
Rhonda Mills, a junior, felt that “Men
must learn there is more to a woman than
her physical features.”
The “Bad Girl” contest, sponsored by
W1GO, solicits interested women to send
in a picture of themselves in a bathing suit
by November 23. No other qualifications
were needed to enter the contest and the
winner will be featured in the May issue of

to and understand children from all walks
of life.”
In order to achieve these goals Mr.
Daniels is striving to procure as much
knowledge as possible while at
Morehouse. Upon graduation he hopes
to further his education at Howard
Medical School in Washington
1).C. Fernando chose Howard because he
feels that the black educational
experience is superior, because “if offers
more personalized opportunities for
young black students.” Fernando would
like to see "the decade of the 80's bring
about more progressive steps by the black
community to save the things which we
believe important and irreplaceable, such
as black neighborhoods, black schools
and most importantly black colleges.
playboy. According to an employee of the
station, a two-piece bathing suit is
preferable.
The Spotlight attempted to reach the
station manager for comment however,
the manager was in conference at the
time.
Other women on Spelman’s campus
also spoke out against the contest. Denise
Daniels, a sophomore, claimed “Flesh is
weak and I think the contest is
disrespectful.” Avis Bynum, a senior,
wishes, “the radio stations would do more
lor the women in the black community.”
said Mr. Paschal proudly. “. . . For food
like that, you will have to come here.
Fernando’s extracurricular activities
include movies, swimming, and sports,
but Omega is his heart. He views Omega
as an “incomparable brotherhood that I
wouldn’t trade for a million bucks!” He
adds. “People perceive us as being just
wild and crazy and going nowhere. They
’fail to realize that there is a lot of intellect
behind the ‘dirty dog' image. Most of us
are very academically inclined and are
ranked in the top 1 Off of our particular
departments.”
The guiding force in Fernando’s life is
his philosophy that “No matter how high
the mountain, you can climb,it. With
enough will and determination you can
accomplish any mission, no matter how
difficult.” Most important in Fernando's
life is his personal relationship with God.
"He’s my source of strength, the one lean
