O N assuming the duties and responsibilities of the
publication of tliu Southern Banner, the Editor.-
feel themselves bound by every sense of duty, both to
the former patrons ol the Athenian, and llinae of tl.Ut
friends whose aid they confidently anticipate—in order
to retain Ihc one and merit the othcr-to lay before them
a lair and candid, but succinct expnsilton of the prin
ciples by which they are to be governed and directed
in the prosecution of their arduous and responsible un
dertaking. They do not think it neccssarv at this late
day—a day which la shedding its light an<f glory, witli
such general and invigorating 'power over our whole
body politic, to enter elaborately and minutely into u
detail of their political views anil opinions. Indeed, tu
do so, lynuld lie virtually offering an insult ta tho good
sense of tho community. To profess tho mint of the
blessed founder of our holy religion, is in itself a attfti-
cient guarantee of the principles ol the genuine Chris
tian, so do they hold it only necessary to own nnd pro-
teas the nanus of Ilia'three great apoatlea of correct
principles, in order to satisfy an enlightened commu
nity of tho nature of their political failh, and the innvi
tablo tendency of (heir future practice. The Southern
Banner, then, will rest hereafter for support and patron
age, on the broad, firm, and immutable rock nfRepnti
licanistn. All Ihoscpuieandhallowcddoctrineswliicl'
originally flashed upon the world from the pen of a
Jtflernn—which have been cherished snd handed down
to us by our venerated Crawford, and professed so in
flexibly, and so triumphantly practised, in many rei.
necta, by our favorite Troup, will in it find a champion,
however humble, yet of stern and uncompromising in
tegrity.
Various causes will, they believe, tend to render the
Banner hereafter, (anil they any it without intending
tho least reflection on the course pursued by their wor
thy predecessor, the late proprietor nf the Athenian,)
of more general interest and of greater valtio to the
party, than it has been of Into, and none of which seams
to them, so well calculated to produce this result, as
the opposition which will be shortly exerted, in this
place, to theirpress, and to their principles. Thisiden
they do not deurecatc, but rather cherish, knowing
that nn honorable nnd liberal eppetf(fen, wfll tend to stim
ulate them tothe performance' of their duty, whilst llicv
liopo it will rally to their support, their friends, and lint
friends of tho party, for whole interest and proaperitv
they arc determined to dovate every honorable exeitloii.
The editors have engaged among the r correspon
dents, several gentlemen of established Literary an-l
Political character,whose communications will licrcut
ter servo to enrich snd ndom the columns of th"
Southern Banner. And with regard to tho other de
partments ofthe paper, they can but add, that their
best exertions will bo devoted to render them useful
and mousing to their patrons and rnadrra.
Great promises are, however, at beat, but cheap
commodities, and of course they fool themselves Nmn-I
to say as little, and prmnisn as charily as possible; but
in launching Inrllt their little barque upon the
stormy waves of public "pinion, they must trust alone
to their skillful pilotage for meriting, and winning for
it, mootings sale and snug in tho hcir'iof their follow -
citizens.
