to be entitled the
Southern Baptist Reg Aster.
BY JAIgES W. PRICE.
f T is a fact generally conceded, that the molt neces
sary study of mankind, is how to prepare for ore-
fulness in life, and happiness in eternity. The necessity
is of consequence apparent, that every facility which
the ntind can invent, or the imagination devise, should
be thrown in their way, to aid them in accomplishing
this most important of purposes, this most desired ot
objects. The publisher deems this a sufficient apology
for the prospectus he now offers.
As its title indicates, the Register is designed parti-
cularly to disseminate fuels in relation to the Baptist
denomination ; to trace its history, to recount its trials
and give' intelligence of ita success; yet in doing so, ii
will present nothing to which the Christian of any de
nomination whatever, can object. Ita aim will be to
encourage virtue, promote piety, and uphold tho doc
trine and precepts of our holy religion. To these ob.
jectsa large portion of thn paper will bedevoted; yet'o
make it acceptable to families penenl!y,and answ er II.
purposes of ordinary newspapers, it will regularly for-
nish a synopsis of passing events, without interfering in .
party or political strife.
With litis very brief exposition ofltis design, the Pub. -
fisher submits it to lira public, trusting with confidence
to their decision upon bis claims for patronage and sue. -

Planters’ Hotel,
For the publication of a Literary and Miscel
laneous Journal in Athens, Geo.
to be entitled the
SEMDMiaONTHBY XttAQAZPTCl.
BY JAMES A. WRIGHT.
I N issuing proposals for the publication of a periodi
cal like the ono contemplated, the Editor is awsre
nf the difficulty which mnstattend it; but having bent
long convinced that the entire absence of such works
in tho South, and particularly in our own State, irises
more from a want of literhry energy than literary re
sources and capabilities; he lias consented with the-
advico of a few intelligent friends, to issue this pin. -
pectus.
It is considered entirely useless to enter into a parti
cular course of lessoning, to demonstrate to the pub
lic that a paper devoted to literary and miscellaneous
intelligence, published in this Slate, will not at least be
of as much utility as other works of tho same order,
published in distant parts uf the Union. It must, how
ever, be obvious to every reflecting individual, that the
most strict and general reliance (with few exception:)
on each and all our native resources as a people, in an
swering thoso demands unavoidably arising from tho
social compact, must ever result in gcr.cralas well gs
special benefits. Why is it that our ” sister states” of
tho North, and to some extent the Weal also, have gono
so much farther in the dovelopemcnt of genius ilun
ourselves ? This question cannot be sulved without
taking into tho account the fact, that there tliero aru
mediums thro’ which the eff usions of genius can with
out difficulty or delay meet the public eye, and receirc
its aprobalion, while here up such outlet exists. If an
individual in our own State should feel a desire to com
pile and arrange a few incidents which accident hid
thrown in his way, well calculated " tn point a moral
or adorn a talc,” lie lias either to ray its pottage ton
distant stato, or perchance sec it gudding to tho cabi
net of a statesman in tho columns of sorno p-ditici!
newspaper. This reflection will at onco prod'Ct tho
conviction in the mind ofevory thinking individual, liut
the establishment of a literary and miscellaneous peri
odical in this state, will be well calculated to ckll forth
the productions of individuals possessed of genius—lire
mnro scintillations of which, have heretofore been con-
fined to the immediate community in which they reside.
Tite general circulation of a periodical containing
amusing and instructing information, will ho of great
utility in numerous other respects; it trill create •
taste for miscellaneous reading, which when satisfied
lo some extent, will induce the individual to turn to
something of a more solid and useful nature; and when
conducted cautiously with a view lo its moral influ
ence, may bo made to produce a disposition (particu
larly in juvenile minds) inimical lovico and correspon
dingly attached to virtue.
The Magazine will be made up of Tales, original ud
selected, (but ail of very recent appearance) of a monl
and instructing nature. Original and selected pieces
on vnrinus sublets of general interest, both in prow
and verse. Extracts Tram the papers and periodicals
of the day. No pains will he spared to render it useful
and instructing to its patrons.
