FlAtfeeiWCtftthftTexas Rangers and
_ ^T'. Ifiilaus.
We. recently published some particu
lars of an expedition of Texas Rangers,
commanded by Capt. John S. Ford, a
famous Indian lighter, in search of and
'agaius.t the Nakonies, a bAnd of Caman-
chcs. Tbe expeflition left Fort Belk
nap 01 the 25th April, Capt. Ford hav
ing under his command one hundred
■and eleven Rangers and' one hundred
and ten Indians from Brau'os Reserve.
It was stated that Ford’s men were well
mounted and equipped, and each man,
»n addition to it good gun, had one or
two six shooters, (Colt’snavy revolvers)
The Rangers, it was stated, were all
picked men, and being unencumbered
■with baggage, could march with great
rapidity. The Nakonics were believed to
be camped nearly North'of Fort Belk
nap, about three days good trtiVel, and
•North of Rod rivet, apd it was under
•stood that they were confident of whip
ping any force sent against theta.. .
We havo been-cxpectmg to receive,
overy recant arrival from Texas,
accounts.« *Uis expedition, and- last
evening we were gratified by the peru
sal of a letter from Austin, briofly an
nouncing that Ford Las achieved such
'fli victory oyer the Indians as will most
* jprobabiy 'cause the survivors to lemove
'quickly and permanently from the
northern‘frontier.
The letter states that an express
drom Capt. Fovd arrived at Austin on
Jlhoevening of the 26th ult., with the
U.u x.ayq£U.ro..
*ep in with the Indians, and that b run
ning fight, covering six miles of ground,
had been fought, in. which the
Vere fcompietfeiy victorious. Tbe
Jfins, it appears, numbered some two hun-
i&ted warriors, and Ford bad one hun
dred end two -Rangers and one hundred
and thirteen Reserve'Indians—the lat
ter under command of Capt. Bass*—
Capt. Ford reports seventy-six Indians
known to be killed, eeVbral wounded,
-and seventeen t^ken prisoners, and
| -three hundred horses captured. The
H one white “man and
l and two slightly
■wounded. This is indeed a telling blow
the Indians liavo received. It m a long
time since such a lesson was ndminister-
•od to them, and this will, it is "to he
| 'presumed, be effectual in putting a stop
pto. their depredations on the northern
frontier.
We have no farther particulars, but
'from the information we had of Capt.
Ford’s plans, wo are inclined to think
tLat tho fight was principally fought by
flio Rangers, unassisted by tho Indians
from tfcu Reserve, as Capt. Foil reports
three hundred horses captured, and it
was stated when he left Fort Belknap
that he intended to employ hu Indian
-allies in stealing or stampeding the Nn-
kon'es’ horses before the attadk was
made, so as td prevent the enemy from
making their escape, and in this he ap
pears, to have been successful.
