Announcements.
Admitted to the Bar.—The
Atlanta Sun of the 25th says that
Mr. Howel! Glenn was admitted to
the bar on the presentation of his
diploma from the University Law
School in Athens, where he recent
ly graduated. Mr. Gleen stood
high during his connection with
the University, as a debator, havw
ing on several occasions represent
ed the Society of which he was a
member, in public efforts, in which
he always acquitted himself with
distinction. We cordially wish him
success in his professional career.
j Countv Convention.—Special
| attention is directed to the call, by
j Dx. J. B. Carlton, President of the
Democratic club of Clark
/^GEORGIA, Clark coqptjr,
VJ We, the Grand Jurats, empaneled and.
sworn for August term, 1872, of Clark
Superior Court, beg leave to make the
folinwitig general presentments:
Wc have examined the public buildings
of the county and find them in good
condition, except the jail in Athens,
which is in a very filthy and unwhole
some condition. We therefore suggest
that- the Sheriff be allowed to use the
jail in Watkinsville.
HOADS, BRIDGES, Ac.
The roads in the county generally are
not in as good condition as they should
be, and we present the Commissioners of
Roads for negligence in the discharge of
their official duties, and urge the import
ance of a more vigorous enforcement of
the law in the premises:. *
Mitchell's Bridge, and .the ’Lower
Bridge at Athens, (known as the Depot
Bridge) are thought to be in an unsafe
condition, We hope the Ordinary will
look after the same immediately.
We further recommend that the Legis
lature tie petitioned through our Repre
sentatives to abolish the pres*ut road
laws and substitute therefor a road tax,
believing it impracticable ever to hava
good roads under existing laws.
COUNTY BOOKS.
We find that the bouksof the Clerk of
the Superior Court, the Ordinary and the
Treasurer should be a source of pride to
the officers named, as they aro a credit to
the county.
The books of the Tax Collector are
neatly kept, and show that the entire
county tax has been collected and paid
over to the Treasurer, except 5 per cent.
For this remainder the Collector has is
sued executions and takeu the Sheriff's
receipt for the same.
The Receiver's books look well, but
show a good many defaulters, among
persons worthy of credit. We learn that
some parlies who liave never given in
their taxes ore not reported as defaulters,
whilst others who gave in their taxes,
are reported as defaulters. We further
find that the Receiver failed to keep
some of his appointments, or was in such
condition at those appointments as to l>e
until lor business.
The books of the Justice of the Peace
are in the main well kept, and afford a
lair index as to the county morals.
