A Trip In the Country.
leaving Athens one day last
week, we made a (lying trip to Jcf»
season, Gainesvilleand Clarkesville.
We found crops gotid everywhere,
and the people in gra.nl spirits.—
There is very little interest mani
fested in |Miiiii>-s; indeed the gener
al apathy is anything but encour
aging to the friends of good gov
ernment
Gainesville is still improving,
notwithstanding the cars run daily
to Mount Airy, 25 miles beyond.
We intended giving a more detail
ed account of our stay at Gaines
ville, which wns made very pleas
ant by the cordial greeting of old
friends.
Mount Airy is about ten miles from
Clarksville, to which passengers
are taken by good lines of stages.
There have been a large number of
visitors to that deligh ful region
this summer. The hotels have
much of the time been quite crowd
ed. We stopped at the Glolv,
kept by Mr. O'Callahatn, and had
good accommodations.
We meet many warm friends of
the Banner all along the entire
trip, to whom we were indebted for
substantial courtesies.
Let us Hare Peace.
It must be admitted that the work
•of the eanvass has been delayed
-until there remains but a short time
in widen to inspire the wavering,
•bring up the Strnggleis. and make
rthe final charge on the ci euiy's
works. The results in Vermont
; and Maine, though not cheering,
.-afford no cause for discouragement,
raa our friends there were not in
spired by the least hope of success.
The great battle is to be fought in
New York, Pennsylvania and In-
-diuna, in October. Victory there
will inspire the Democracy of the
-South with confidence and enthu
siasm, which arc of slow growth in
it he canvass thus far. But as w<
•lean on them for help, we must not
forget that our State election in
October will have great effect at the
North, as an indication of the ac
ceptanoe of the Reform movement
the South. The great object «>l
the movement, and about all that
•txuamemls it to our peo le, is, that
it breathes a spirit of reconciliation.
Let us show that we appreciate and
reciprocate rhis noble animating
sentiment, and resolve to vindicate
. it by our votes.
He Atlanta Mass Xretiag.
The editor was present at the
Greeley mass meeting in Atlanta
on Tuesday. The attendance from
abroad was very small, but the city
ami vicinity afforded a good crowd,
who listened attentively tospeeche.-
froin Cola Peeples, Trippe, Gen.
Colquitt, Gen. Bonham, and Col.
hH-hier. There were no very
marked evidences of enthusiasm,
i tit tne eruwd appeared to be uni
ted oii the idea that it is better to
vote lor Greeley than for Grant, or
tuan not to vote at all. None of the
eminent speekers from abroad were
present, and the meeting does not
Mtciu to have been very fully ad
vertised.
Money is too scarce, and the peo
ple are too busy to leave home to
attend any big demonstrations —
Neignlmrhoud barbecues, atid que:
personal, with a free circulation < f
documents, are the most effective
agencies for effecting public opinions
in this canvass.
r -, sole and especial purpose as the con
vention of the 7th was called simply to
nominate candidates for the Legisla
ture. ^.Again; did you not hear Dr. J.
B. Cariton President of the Dcmocr t
ic Club of Clark county state in that
convention, in which the county was
fully represented, that a Moss Meeting
would be held on the 13th for the pur
pose of appointing delegates to the con
vention to bo held at Gainesville Sep
tember 25th, to nominate our Congres
sional ticket!
We think the gentleman will answer
that he was there, and, that he did ad-
rise that a “ Mass Meeting” be called,
and it is our opinion that he heard the
chairman of the convention make the
Announcement that the “Mass Meet
ing” would be held on the 13th. ,
Mr. Editor I deprecate very much
this state of affairs. I hoped that five
years of disorganization had uot passed
over our heads without leaving their
le s >n behind. I had hoped that the
day was not far distant when we could
boast thorough organization, which in
its lasts analysis, is but success. But
it seems that it has been a political
cheam, for after the Democratic party
of Clark county has assembled and
taken action in a matter of which due
uotice was given, we see nu article in
the editorial column of the Watchman
calling a Mass Meeting of the citizens
of the county to nominate delegates to
the Gainesville convention of the 25th,
claiming to have beeu inserted at the
request of many citizens. Who are
the many citizen ? They are not from
the other side of the river, for we are
reliably informed, and are certain, that
the county is satisfied with the action of
the Mass Meeting of the 13th. Well,
then, who are they? Without accusing
the Watchman of any fraud in the mat
ter, wo are certainly inclined to think,
until itb . | r >ved to the contrary that the
uany citizens are no tuoreor less than its
editor and one other gentleman in
Athens, and we do not think that it is
simply from a love of justice that they
make thecal] but that these gentleman
wish to do some packing, or cutting
and drying of programmes themselves.
We have known Mr. Christy from
secession up to reconstruction and this
is the first instance of Lis taking a
pronounced {>osition upon any question.
Does the gentleman appreciate the
harm he may effect. Does he realize
that his action tends to undermine the
foundation mid sever the organization
of the Democratic jiarty of Clark ?—
.Will he persist iu a call for another
meeting upon a matter when action
has beeu taken upon that matter in a
convention under the call of the Presi
dent of the County Club? If he does,
it will lie but to find out tlmt Clark
county is organized, emi tlmt she will
-ustuin the action both of her party and
>lie President ofth.it (uirtv. and tlmt no
one or two dissentient men, by bolting
will carry any influence or votes with
them.

to the lower rank in all that per

attempt to establish the common
school system in the State,” says
the Governor, “ has not been crown
ed with the success that was anticiw
pjted.” And why ? Because the
limited funds which the impov-r-
islied people were able to raise by
taxatiou, has been “ misapplied” —
to use Governor Smitn’s own
phrase. Through a series of un>
j wise acts, also, heavy obligations
have been incurred ; and, although
the State Legislature has attempted
to remove the evil by remodeling
the school system, even the teachers
still remain unpaid.
We record these untoward cir
cumstances as a part of the educa
tional news of the day. The story
closely resembles that which we
printed a week or so ago in rela
tion to the misappropriation ol
school funds in Texas. Lessons
like these ought to he pondered,
for they go far toward explaining
the secret of the prosperity anil the
growth of more favitfed localities
where the school is maintained as
regularly as the Church ; and, bes

occasionally carp at the imposition
of the school tax. Let Georgia and

There was considerable wrangling,
it seems, iu the Eighth District Dem

The Constitution has the following
oa this subject, which is full of good

Do nut send abroad for help, if you

own honest, iudustrious, faithful me
chanics. They need all the work they
get. By such a curse you keep
money at home, assist the worthy, and
have just as good work performed. It
i? the only way to make ywir town
prosper—to support your own schools,
churches and | rcss.- Where there is
a disposition to send a hundred miles
for nn article that, to say the least,
could be manufactured as well at your
ovn door, there will always belittle
or no busiuess done in the place. The
churches will be thinly attended and
