ever, there shall bo raised several regi
ments—cavalry artillery and infuntry,
and such other troops as shall comprise
an etticient army—to serve for three
yonrs, or lest time. Also, authorising
tho Govern or to accept and cull intoser-
vico such number of volunteers as the
exigencies of tho times may require; to
serve for such length of tlmo as may be
necessary.
It provides for tho appointment of a
Major General to command the whole
Alabama forces, to he under the direc
tion ami control of tho Governor. Also
for the selection of suoh Brigadier Gen
erals, Adjutant nml (Quarter-master Ucn
orals, an Ordinance officer, ifto., Ac., *u

Dear Sir—The safe I purchased of you in
September last tins stood thegreatflre which
occurred in our town on lho33iFKabuary splen
didly. 1 had a large amount of notes, receipts
ftc. in it, bolore the building burned 1 took
the papers out but put in some sheets of ua~
j>or, aud upoh opening it since the burning,
NOT EVEN SCORCHED.
The veencringon the drawers was a little
warped t Ihe lock works very well,
when I oil ft a little 1 think it willbeasgood
as ever. My enfo was in the lower story of
three story building with shingle roof. In n
adjniulug room, with only a plastered parti
tion, a drug store was kept, nnd immediately
opposite where my >ufe was setting there was
a considerable quantity cf paints, oils, tur
pentine, enmphino, nn-l Hunors. The build
ing was eon neotod wish the Patterson Hotel
on one side and was within six foot of th
Court Houso on tho other, witli a large pile
of wood between my office and tho Court
House, and a door entering into my office im
mediately from tho wood. There’was also
small framebnilding attached to the rear*
the Drugstore, with oils, paints, and liquors
iu it, and a glass door lending into my office
from it. You will see at ones the excessive
heat created at and about It. I regard tt
fully tested, and hnve no hesitaney in sav
ing that my papers would have been pre
served if I had Ivft them ill the safe.
A number of uur eitisens have examined
it since the firo and were surprised at its
condition, and some of them have ordered
