FRIDAY, APRIL 3, 1818.
ar-- ■ ... -
ABOU T day break yesterday morning,
a fire broke out in the Bake-House of Mr.
Pierson, at the lower end of Broad-Street
in this place ; as soou as the alarm was giv
en, the Fire Company and Citizeus general
ly, repared with promptitude to the place of
danger, and it is but justice to remark, that
there was perhaps never less confusion, or
a more quiet and steady attention to duty in
all persons collected upon any similar occa
sion ; it would have been impossible to have
saved the house in which the lire commen
ced, but the adjoining buildings which were
all of wood were preserved, and the flames
did not extend in any way, beyoud what
from the situation of the premises, must ne
cessarily have been thesubject of its destruc
tive influence. The promptitude with which
the line for handing water was formed, and
the judgment with which all exertions were
employed, produced sueh effects, as will we
hope, tend to secure a similar conduct in any
c-ses of similar misfortune. VVe do not
know how the fire originated, a large quan
tity of fodder it is stated, was placed over
the oven, and it has been conjectured, that
jt was kindled by the heat of the bricks, but
however it might have been enkindled, the
flame it occasioned tended to ensure the de
struction of the building in which it was
placed; this circumstance is mentioned ra
ther byway of caution, against placing fodder j
and fire in such contiguous situations, that a I
ready intercourse may take between them, j
More Counterfeit Money.-—. Yesterday '
morning, Mr. Byhd, of the Planters' Hotel, |
found concealed ou one of the beams in the
privy of that establishment a buudi* of
Counterfeit One Dollar Bills (23 in number)
of the Philadelphia Bank; and one Fifty
Dollar Bill of the Hagerstown Bank; roll
ed up in the eveiope of a letter. They had
no doubt becu placed there within a day or
two, by some one of the gang of villains who
are now supposed be in this city. The bills
of the Philadelphia Bank are most wretched- j
ly executed, the names being evidently cn- !
graved ant! struck off at the same time with j
the body of the bill; they are besides done '•
upon very inferior paper. That of the Ha
gerstown Bank, is somewhat better executed, 1
aud might deceive one not conversant iu I
bank bills generally.
Sh.ee writing the above, we learn that
Nicholas Williams, who was committed
to jail ou Sunday last, for passing forged or I
lict.tious Bills, was yesterday discharged
from confinement, aud the Magistrate who j
committed him, ordered to deliver up to hitn !
lire Bills in question !11 Charles. Courier. I
AWFUL EXPLOSION.
Copy of a letter from Joseph B ring hurst,
Esq. to Mr. H. Niles, dated
Wilmington, (Del.) 3d m. 20, 1818. j
ESTEEMED FRIEND,
Yesterday 1 give thee a very hasty and
confused aecuuut of the explosion of ft. i. |
Dupont’s powder mill. We then appreheu- j
► deg ihat the accident had oecured at the
lower nulls, ami expected that Duplanly’s,
M’Lane’s and Simms' cotton mills were
thrown down. But they are nil sale—noth
ing but their windows were injured. The
mischief began at the pounding mill of ft. 1.
Dupont & Co’s upper works. 'Several men
were at that mill, aud one person discovered
fire iu the sleeve of one of Ihe hands. He
instantly darted out of the mdl—exclaiming,
“ we are all lost !”—rushed on the race
bridge, and pushed a man with him into (he
water, aad under the bridge—This was all !
done in a moment, and the explosion took
place while they remained under the bridge.
The graining house and magazine were cov- I
ered with a sho>er of lire, and inado a terri- j
ble havoc of buiidiugs anil men. All the
houses on a level with the works, were shat
tered to pieces—the fragments covering two
acres. Mangled bodies and limbs were in
different directions, s.veral hundred feet
from the place of explosion, it is appre- !
hended that thirty persons were killed, and
twelve w ounded —live of the latter danger
ously. But the loss of lives cannot yet be
accurate ascertained—because some who are
missing may possibly have run from the
place of danger, and be yet safe too much
terrified to return. More than thirty per
sons are missing—my brother, B. Feris, pas
sed over the melancholy scene of ruins yes
terday afternoon. He told me he saw man
gled bodies, feet, legs and arms, in different
directions, many hundred feet from the mills.
In the woods, more than an eighth of a mile
from the place of explosion, he saw a long
piece, perhaps nine or ten inches, and seve
ral broad—on examination, he discovered a
perfect ear attached to it. I state this to
shew thee how the bodies were mangled.
The loss of property is most probably about
tbirtv thousand dollars. This is my own
estimate, from my knowledge of the buildings
aud information of the quantity of powder.
I wish it may prove to be overrated. E. I.
Dupont’s family are all safe, at least with
very trifling injury. His brother-in-law,
Delmas, who was supposed to have been kil
led is likely to do well; his arm is fractured
in two piaees. and his shoulder dislocated
Oar town was violently shaken, by the
concussion of the air—-and we were thrown
into much alarm by many persons coming
into it, and running down the streets, crying.
“ Open your windows and come out of your
houses—the magazine is expeeted to explode
every moment, and it has sixty thousand wt.
of powder in it.” We concluded, very rea
sonably, that if the explosion of the pouud
iug mill and grauulamig house lied caused
such violent sbocks, as we felt, the firing of
the magazine would shake and ruin some of
our bouses. Ihe people remained an hour j
in the streets before the error was corrected
—it was the magazine which shook us so
terribly. In haste, &e.
Letter from the Emperor Alexander to the
Duke of IfelUngton.
Moscow, Oct. 30, 1817.
Placed as you are, my Lord Marshal, at
the head of the military forces of the Euro
pean Alliance, you have contributed more
than once, by the wisdom and moderation
which distinguishes you, to reconcile the most
important interests. 1 have constantly ad
dressed myself to you iu all circumstances
which might influence the consolidation of
that order of things which was established,
principally in France, by your glorious ex
ploits. Your energy in aetieu, your pru
dence in council, have never ceased to pro
duce the most desirable results.
Now that the questions of private claims 1
on France acquires a erilial ami decided cha
racter, on account of the difficulties presen-
I ted by the literal execution of the convention
; of November, 1 could not think it right to
conceal my opiniou from the Monarciis, my j
allies, on the more of considering this bur- i
den-some engagement, so as to prevent its I
infraction, and to render its execuiiou pos
sible.
The assertions ofthe French government
1 are known to you, my Lord Marshal; my
j Minister at Paris has received directions to
j communicate to you the memorial which was 1
I drawn up under my eye, relative to this iin- j
! portaul question. 1 invite you to fix all y our
| attention on the connexion of the motives of
: right aud political expedience, which are
laid down iu this document, in support of
the principles of accommodation, wk#ch
alone can simplify the complication inherent
in the payment of private debts w hich were
imposed upon France at a time when it was
uot easy to foresee their result.
You, doubtless, appreciate, my Lord Mar
shal, all those graver considerations which
I plead iu favor of a system of equitable conci
j Ration ; you will tiring all the warmth of a
; soul elevated to the heigh ill of the ocassiou
| to a question, on w hich depends, perhaps,
! the repose of France, and the inviolability
iof the most sacred eng igemeuts. Modera
tion and good lailh have been, in our time
! the sources of a healing ar il beneficent pow
j er 5 a»d it is for him ono prepared aud fur
thered the triumphs, to cause to be heard, iu
j off critical moments, ike language of that
' setae moderation, and of Inal same good
: faith. 5
In this conviction, if I had still a' w ish to
express, it would be to see you couductin
; w ith the consent of my allies, and that oi
j the parties interested, the principal part of
| the uegociatioii which may be opetied al Pa
lis ou the question of the private claims, and
! on tiie most equitable mode of deciding it
i with the common consent,
i Receive, Marshal, the reiterated testimo
nies of my entire esteem.
