AUGUSTA HERALD. TUESDAY, JUNE 30, is is. THE most important and interesting European intelligence, received by the last northern mails, will be found under the pro* per heads in this day’s Herald. IMPORTANT. From the New- York Mercantile Advertiser of June 17. Latest from Gibraltar, The ship Belle, Leslie, which arrived at this port yesterday evening, sailed from Gibraltar on the 10th May. Mr. MEADS RELEA3ED! By this arrival, we have the important intelligence, that Mr. MEADE was for malty released from imprisonment early iu May, in compliance w ith the imperative do maud of our government, the (Spanish go- ' vernment having chosen to do justice rather ! than risque the alternative threatened. We i regret our inability to lay before our readers | the interesting document which restored Mr. ; Meade his liberty, but hope to be enabled to procure a copy for publication to-morrow, j The United States line of battle ship Washington, commodore Chauncey, arrived at Gibraltar on the 7th May , in 12 days from Mahon, and would sail fur New-York in about 10 days after the Belle. She left the residue of the American squadron all well, and the crews in a perfect healthy state. They had recently appeared before Algiers and' Tunis, and as usual excited great respect at those places. The whole squadron was expected at Gibraltar about j the 20th May. The plague continued to rage at Algiers, and was extending westward. All the ships of the Russian squadron at Cadiz, have been formally condemned as un sea worthy. Emigration. —We learn (says) the Na tional Advocate.) that a gentleman has late ly arrived in JNew-York, from England, whose object is te settle in the llliuois ter ritory; that his family and settlers brought over with him, amonnt to 51 persons ; that he has furnished himself with agricultural instruments, seeds of various kinds, some cows, sheep and hogs, lor breeding, and about 100,000 pounds sterling in money.— This is doing business to a great national as well as individual profit; Hud if gentlemen of fortune and enterprise will emigrate in the same manner, our western states will shortly be the most flourishing part of the world. A young man by the name of Thomas J. Hosraylee, of Liverpool, (Eng.) who ar rived in Charleston on Thursday lust, in the ship Telegraph, front New-York. drowned himself on the following night. Pecuniary distress, or disappointment in business, sr.vs the Courier, is assigned as the cause of this rash ast. lie is said to he ol'a very respecta ble family. The Philadelphia Democratic Press, of the 10th instant, mentions that orders bad just been received in that eity from the nuvv department, “ to lay down the keels of two seventjiTourg.” Through the vigilance of the officers of the revenue cutter Deling, many of the goods! that were smuggled from the La Pnstora, J now in our harbor, have been found and i taken possession of—The captain of the I Voung Spartan, and miny of his crew, have) also been taken and lodged in gaol. They ; have committed nHence* v-liicb can nnlv be ; expiated by making their exit From (he gal lows. [Savannah lit pub. Boston, June 10. The gal lant general Miller is erdpred by the presi dent to receive the surrender on the part of j the Uuited Slates; am! governor Brooks will forthwith select an officer tc accompany 1 him, on the part of this state. A quack caught —A boy who had wound ed lus eye by a penknife, made application to Richard It. Smith, (professing himself a physician) who administered an ointment of lard, pereipitate and spirits of turpentine, bv which the boy received injury. The Su pVeme Court at Worcester, Mass, fined the qsack $250. The remains of Kosciusko has been re moved from Soleure to Cracow, in Russia, where the Emperor Alexander intends to raise a monument to his memory. Raleigh, N. C. May 19. THE ACADEMY- —The examination of the students (;ib;>ut 200) of this institu tion, was finished on Thursday week, and on the day following the report of toe 1 Trustees, on their comparative merits, was j read at the State House by Jas. F. Taylor, ' E«q. Two young ladies, Miss Worthing- j Ton, (of this county), and Miss Lonu, (of j Georgia), then received goidsn medals and ; honorary certificates in consequence of hav ing eompleated, with great credit, their whole course of education at this Academy. The ceremonies of the day were closed by au address to the students from Chas. Mea ly. E q which we are told war. peculiarly interesting and elegant. Ua Monday next th& exercise* re-eomuicace. Among all the varieties in the science of electioneering, we have never before seen just such a specimen as the following— From the Fork Recnrtler. We notice in the Adams Ceotinel, an ad vertisement by John Sweeny, offering him self as a candidate for the Sheriff*! y, and pointsont to particular notice the following: “ 1 have obtained an exclusive right from the President of the U riled States, for an improvement on the Washing Machine—if I am alected, this I give to the cuuaty of Adams, for every one to make use, and sell as they see proper—l ask for this vour votes. * J. S.” We are not sure but this is an advance to wards bribery direct. Ifso.it may not, per haps, be strictly justifiable. Rut, if the laws do not reach the point, if it be, ag the law yers say, casus omissus, we think the man must come before his constituents with a j very good grace; apd if they are in such a ! predicament, as to stand in need of his ma ! cll * ne t 0 amsh themselves up for use as well i as appearance, they probably cannot do bet- I J er ,han t( > elect him. We ’think it would j be somewhat amusing to attend the noils on I this occasion. As it is fashionable' at the south lor the candidates for popular favour i mee J their friends, and display their pecu liar talents as au inducement for their votes, it is to be presumed that Mr. Sweeney will appear equipped for a washing-match— or in other Words, “ in the suds,” and prepared to scrub himself into office. It is to be re gretted that the practice in his district does not comport with that which once prevailed m a neighbouring state, where the ladies used to vote. A man skilled in this most important domestic science would be sure of their suffrage, ; and if to washing , he could only add ironing, nothing would be able to “ compete” with such a candidate.
