As to leaving his bed and board without any provocation, i is a falsehood; he has threatened my life repeatedly and beaten my b dv se verely, which can be proven by several respectable citizens in our neighbor hood. By the arrival last evening nf the Hercules , Capt Cobb, and this morn ing of the Edward Byam, Capt. Lea der, both in 28 day* from Liverpool, the Editors of the Commercial Ad vertiser have received London papers o the 13th of August, and Liverpool to the 14th, both inclusive. Our Lloyd’s Lists are only of the 4th an d 7th. The “ Nun” of the 13th, announ ces that the alarming symptoms of the Qneen’s long illness have disappear ed, and there is reason to hope, that in a short time she will be fully re-in •tated in her accustomed health.— The private reports of the Medical Attendants are said to be even more favorable than those which have re ceutly been publicly announced. The misguided workmen at Stock port, in consequence of the determin ed firmriess of the magistrates and the resolution of the manufacturers to put the law rigidly in execution, have re turned to their work, and tranquility, it is said, is entirely restored in that district. In Manchester. 12 or 14.000 at the latest adviees, still remained refractory. Measures, however, were in operation, by which it was hoped that “ industry and comfort would soon be restored to the woikmeu and their families.” A London paper, of the 13th of August, states that Edward Spence Curlin, Esq. of the house of Messrs. Goodwill & Co. of Ramsgote, has been appoiHtert Vice-Consul, at that plaee, for the United States of America, in place of the late Mr. Nathaniel Aus tcu. A Liverpool pnper of the 14th of August, says, that there is every rea son to believe that the eause of the re turn of the Duke «f Wellington to this country ut present, is the total failure of all attempts to effect an amicable 'adjustment of the subsisting differen ces between Spain and Portugal: the latter being resolute in its refusal to relinquish Monte Video. In this state of things, our government feels itself iu a very serious state of embarrass ment. M. Monge, one of the greatest geo metricians of the age, died lately in Palis, aged 70 years. He was a dis tinguished member of the French In stitute, and one of the men of science who accompanied Bonaparte on his expedition to Egypt. Letters from Madrid to the lfith of July, mention that a change in the war depart was soon expected, and that an expedition of about 3000 troops were preparing to sail fur Havana. The same letters announce, that King Charles the 4lli <s prep mng to pi t. sent to the approaching Congress at Aix laChapelle, a claim to the thrum of Spain; and that he has a strong parly in his favor at Madrid. Our papers give an account of a serious contest between the Students of the University at Guttingm ami the inhabitants of the city. 1 lie mi litary were called in to quell the riot : and live of the students were severely wounded. The remainder, nearly 800 iu number, retired several miles dis taut to the Hessian town of Witzeo liuusen. Ten days afterwards, thev sent a memorial to the public authori ty of Gottengen requesting, that the military might be withdrawn and they permitted to return to the University, l'lie result is not yet known. A Paris paper of the 9lh of August, in noticing the unusual heat of the weather, thus remarks—“ The excee sive heats that we experience have given rise to several meteorological observations, sufficiently interesting. A remarkable circumstance in them is, that the heats are nearly equal throughout Europe, in all latitudes At Home, Berlin, Madrid, and Vien na, the thermometers of Keauinui have risen to the same degrees. Ma lice had spread the report that there reigned a species of plague or conta gious malady in some hospitals of Pa ris. This report is positively false— we have no contagion to dread but that of dangerous doctrines, and Paris requires no lazaretto but a political oue.” T he Paris papers also mention, that eighty houses had lately been destroy ed by lire, and 400 families reduced to misery, iu the Tillage of St. Sulpice, situated iu the department of Cote d'Or. On the 3d of August, Charles Hus sey was executed for the murder of Mr. Bird aud his house-keeper, ai Ureeuwich. Before he was executed, be confessed that he aided in the rob bery, and deserved his fate, but de clared that the murder was committed by two of his associates, while lie kepi watch in the street. London, Aug. 8. The follow ing notice ha* been stuck up in (he Stuck Exchange: « Conversion nf Exchequer Bills into Three per Cent. Consolidated and Reduced Annuities. “Certificates in which the instal ment due on the Ist day of August has i been paid, are non ready for delivery. “ The future instalments are to be made either in Exchequer Bills, dated before the Ist August, 1818, on which . day the interest thereon will cease, or by a payment in money ; in which case 101/ money must he paid in lieu of each 100/of Exchequer Bill** and interest must also be nf the 2d per diem upou each 101/ money, to be computed from the Ist August to the day of payment.” The French papers say, that a con voy of 14 Spanish ships, which sailed . from Cadiz the 24th June, were near ly all captured on the evening of the 25th, by the Insurgent privateers which eruize off Cape St. Vincent.— It is added, that the crews were put on hoard a chase maree whieh formed part of the convoy, and were all dis embarked near Vigo. Secret Expedition. —The expedi tion about to sail on board the Royal \ r aehts, in a profound peace, is, of course, become a matter of great pub lic curiosity. We have been favored , by a correspondent with a statement of some parts of the equipment. The whole of the forces embarked are foreign, and most of them furnish ed by our good ally, the King of France, in return, it is supposed, for the services he lias derived from our . troops. T he provisions on board are of the \ best quality, under the direction of' Commissaries NVatierand Benois. I The greatest attention has been paid to the health of those on hoard, and a detachment of the corps of Roy il Cuppers aud some dismounted Lancers fotm part of the expedition. The French troops and those front the Rhine are furnished with iee by a new arrangement, to preserve their coolness and freshness in the passage down the Channel. Our ancient ally, j the King of Portugal, volunteered any number of his troops; but it is said ihe offer was received at head-quar ters with disdain. With a due and proper respect to the constitution, the foreign troops are placed under the command, for the present, of an Eng <t'h officer, (the Earl of Cork,) under sealed orders, to he opened at Sea; when it is conjectured the Noble Lord’s services will he withdrawn. The Rev. Mr. Bi—b—g is appoint- 1 ed Chaplain to the forces, and a birth has been provided for him under the table. The object of the expedition re- j mams a profound secret.— Statesman. A letter from Constantinople, dated the 4th of June, published at Genoa, slates, that a T urkish lady, a young widow,named Zelida-Almeida,daugh- ter of the late lbrahim-Assid, being overcome with ennui, tit Trecisonde, to which she had retired, was desirous of joining au Italian colonel at Con stantinople, under whose protec tion she intended to make a tour in Europe, taking wi*ti her all her wealth. Her confidents in this pro ject were the Cadi Sherif Hassau, the liostangis Aclimet ami Elinoven, and Iter three favorite slaves; all of whom, on its being discovered, unfortunately lost their heads. The lady lidrself J was condemned to imprisonment for j life. The Italian colonel, at the date of the letter, had not arrived at Con stantinople, but orders had been is sued for his arrest, in case of his inak mg Ins appearance there. So intense was the heat at South ampton on Wednesday last, that a carpet, lying under a Skylight , in a store-room, of a cabinet-maker of that town, was nearly burnt before it was discovered. We lately noticed the eircumstanee of the Leicester packet having, on her passage from Waterford to Milford, between the Sallees and the Smalls, struck upon something supposed to be a whale; and we have since learnt that she was, at the time, sailing at the rate of eight knots au hour. Up on coining in e«utaet with this huge inhabitant of the deep, the vessel was greatly impeded in her course: a tre mulous motion ensued, and on the man at the helm looking astern, he per ceived the tail of what he considered to he a whale, one moment about 20 feet above water, and the next furious ly lashing the waves—apparently from the agony occasioned by the be i fore mentioned concussion, t London, Aug. 13. A strange report, to whieh we ran attach but little credit, is put forth by > ’ one of our morning cotemporaries, res- peeling an attack upon young Napo leon, said to be grounded on advices received yesterday, but of which ad vices we have .heard nothing beyond this questionable tfrtfiTion. It is af firmed that an attempt has been made (within the Emperor of Austria’s Pa lace, we suppose) to assassinate young Napoleon. Several ruffians, we aro told, broke into the chamber where the youth was in bed, and aimed a thrust w ith a poinard at his breast, but which only wounded him in his arm, and he succeeded in getting out of bed and raised an alarm. Three of the villains were secured ; the rest made their escape. Such is the ac count we have given us. If true, we have no doubt the Emperor of Austria will use every meaus to search to the bottom the atrocious attempt. We insert in another column the unusual statement of the health of the Queen, but we must notice another im portant rumor in circulation. It is said, that her Majesty has undergone au operation, by which the water on her chest has been withdrawn. The attendance of Mr. Keat, the Surgeon, and the relief she has enjoyed, seem« cd to countenance this report; but it is attempted to be kept secret. Some doubts having.been expressed as to the truth of the reports of tho Discovery Ships not having found a ' ; passage to the northward practicable, we can now state, that this is placed beyond a doubt, by a letter from Capt. Nairn, of the whale-fishing ship Prin cess of Wales. Capt. Nairn writes, of dale the 7th ult. that on the lCth of June, in lat. 80, 2, he spoke the Discovery Ships, aud was informed, that the highest latitude they had reached was 80, 22; that he then went on board with his log-book, and i learned, that they could find no pas sage farther to the northward on the west side of Spitzbergen. He adds, that the officers gratefully acknow ledged his attention, the Princess of j \Y ales being the first ship they had seen, and offered, in the most hand some manner, to supply him with any thing he might want; and that when ! last seen, the ships were steering to ! the 8. A lew days ago, a widow lady, named Fothcringham, a native of A merica, came to town from the coast ; of Sussex, where she had been for some time residing with her three in fant children, for the purpose of sell ing out stock to the amount of 8001. preparatory to a voyage to her native | country. Having applied to the peo ple of the house to reeommend some professional man to transact her busi ness, a genteel fellow was introduced, who stated that he was a solicitor of* the Inner Temple. He appeared to be perfectly conversant in money trans actions, and after some conversation, Mrs. F. furnished him with the ne cessary docuineuts, aud with a writ ten authority to sell out stock to the amount mentioned. A time was ap -1 pointed for an interview when he was to pay over the money to her, but he ! has never since made his appearance, and the feeliugs of the unfortunate I woman may easily be conceived, when upon inquiry she found that he had absconded with the whole of her pro-i perty, having sold the stock on the 1 day appointed. Harvest will be general in Scotland by the beginning of September. The crop will not only be extremely pro ductive in respect of grain, but the quantity and quality of straw will more than make up the deficiency in hay. In every respect, the crop will be unusually fine; and there is no doubt thaCthe prices of grain will fall considerably. Potatoes are both lux uriant and early, and cannot fail to be eheap unless the great demand for butcher’s meat should make them bo ! used largely in feeding cattle.
