FOR THE IIERdLI).
Censo\*—Xo. 10.
Mr. Bunce,
My last was in reference
to a subject, which it seems lias given
umbrage, or rather put inquiry on the
alert. How do the guilty dread the
exposition of their faults i 1 am not
astonished, that the vengeance of the
libertines should be hurled with fury at
me; but it harms me not. The bar
bed arrows recoil on themselves.
I remarked that the vice, I have al
luded to was dangerous and degrading;
and all that passed since has not chang
ed my opinion of it, Or of those who
are adepts in it; for I cannot esteem
any man, whose morals and manners
are corrupted by indulgences impure
in themselves and destructive in their
consequences. Men of such charac
ter and practice, have a contagious at
mosphere in which to breathe, and when
permitted to associate with virtuous in
dividuals, they are at a loss to act with
that degree of decorum, which should
be essentially preserved in all reputable
circles. Thjs is not astonishing, for as
4^, their deeds are dark, so will be their
hearts, and consequently their conduct
will be deeply marked with notoriety.
It is not long since that 1 had a lull
view of a very fashionable club. I
say fashionable, because it was compos
ed partly of some of me finest looking
fellows. To attempt a complete deline
ation of its features would be useless.
The task is too great and should 1 fail,
perchance, I should offend their digni
ties, but hear me a few moments and
you will be “ am used."'
This assemblage of notoriety Was
1 convened in a house, for I do not wish
you to believe they ever associated
gravely in the street. The house is
conveniently situated in this city (and
whether it is known by any particular
number, is not material, as there are in
general a ndmbe.r in it) and I believe
can be .entered on all sides. Admira
bly constructed ! A charming dam
sel is the governess, and to her credit
be it recorded, her discipline is saluta
ry, and however she may violate partly
(or very fully) a section of a certain
general “ Ordinance ,” she does not,
(So say her friends) keep a disorderly
house. lam pleased with this asser
tion of her admirers, but to the club.
Deliberation seemed to preside for a
time and the excellence of conscious
dignity, name and fortune, appeared to
glisten on the countenance of all, ex
cept a few stragglers, who were not of
blood sufficient to join the men of pluck.
The wine passed socially arid quite of
ten around, until its cheering influence
had awakened, all the dormant pas
sions of the soul. Love, fierce love,
beamed from every eye and so power
fully did it surpass all other feeling,
that each beauteous Helen’ was instant
ly summoned, to add by her presence to
the warmth already kindled in these
genial bosoms What a delectable
view! How wooing and how winning
were these fashionable dandies !
But soon the scene was changed.
Jealousy and distrust were foremost in
the ranks of battle, and seasoned hick
ory, was used in dreadful force on ma
ny an honest head. There are some in
this city, who no doubt feel still the con
sequences of this affray ; and all the
harm I wish them, is, that they may al
ways have cause to endure a rebuff when
engaged in brothel quarrels. There
is something so contemptible in affairs
of this kind, that the moral mind re
coils in disgust. To notice young men,
who, boast the splendour of their par
ents equipage, their wondrous and
monFd names, first on the catalogue of
obscene and beastly indulgence and
dispute, is indeed pitifuL If you must
fight, attack yourselves and conquer
your evil passions. You will then gain
a victory, which Will be laureled by an
approving conscience. It distances far,
very far, the applause of the motley
crew, and beckons you to deeds wor
thy of your purses. While your mid
night revels are crimsoned by your own
blood, and while your interesting dox
ies, are alone the healing balm lor your
wounds; mark me,your course is taint
ed with dishonoui, your prospects will
be blackened by disgrace and your ex
f, horrible!
A hint is sufficient for some on this
head. There are others who are taken
“ to their idols, let them alone’’
I have done for the present on this
subject. Not however because I have
not matter for writing, but since I last
addressed you, your very worthy friend
« Philo Censor’ has contributed to the
public a mite from iiis store. He seems
to be an enemy to you, because forsooth
you have given place to “ Censor” and
refused Inin admittance to x your co
lumns. I should be content were you
to refuse my numbers, (ami you have
given uie one verv friendly hint) and
not attack you for at least exercising
your own will. It would be well to
say that this “ Piiilo Censor' may have
been guilty of some dirty tricks or lie
would not be so much goaded; and I
ran assure you sir, that I am entirely
indifferent as to him or his requested
essays, or his apt friend: and believe me
hi- “ friend.*’ in the Chronicle has miss
ed his man completely. He should be
cautious he may catch “ a tartar.”
This is all I have to say and I leave
them as I found them, endeavorin'* to
injure you, by harming themselves? I
would not have, noticed them, but for
their belief, that they had silenced Cen
sor ; so far from this, I will write when
I please and what 1 please.
FOR THE HERALD.
Mr. Buxce,
IN reply to the second edi
torial paragraph in the Chronicle, 1
have but to observe that the “ epithet j
odious to the character of a gentleman,”
which is pronounced on me therein is
not of any consequence. In my com
munication to “ Philo-Censor,” 1 con
fess I was “ direct, and “ unequivocal ,”
and 1 leave it for those to judge; who
feel interested, whether there was any
friendship, displayed by the admission of
“P. C.” in the columns of the Chroni
cle, towards the editor of the Herald.
As I am not disposed to have any al
tercation with the editors of the Chron
icle, but to maintain substantially, that
which 1 have written, I am content
that they should enjoy their opinion,
and I will foster mine own. The pub
lic cannot be interested either on one
side or the other, and if falsity is to be
attached to my comments or to their
remarks, there is but one inode of test
ing the matter, by the facts themselves. —•
Relative to “ a friend of P. Censor,” he
cannot receive any notice from
