AUGUST A HE HALL). TUESDAY, JULY 17, 1831. We have seen a gentleman (says the Montgomery Republican of the SOth ult.J who left Pensacola on the 17th inst. who informs us that lie met Tien. Jackson, on the same day, in company with the fourth regiment, within fifteen miles of the town, which he was to take immediate possession of the commission ers on the part of Spain having arrived, in the Hornet, as noticed in our last. No mention was made of Capt. Reads health, which induces us to believe the northern editors are under a mistake on that subject. The Directors of the Bank of the United States, have declared a Divi dend of one and a half per cent, for the last six months. No less than six editions of the works of Voltaire and Rousseau are at this time in course of publication in Paris —and they are all attended by suc cess. The demand for books in Spain is i prodigious, and has kept the presses of Paris in unexampled activity for some months past. Mr. John Lewis Krimmel has been employed by sundry gentlemen of Phila delphia to execute an historical pointing of the landing of William Penn and his companions at New Castle, on the 24th ! of October, 1682. The artist is allow ed eighteen months to finish the picture, which is to be six feet in height an d nine feet in breadth. After an exhibition of the same six months in the city of Philadelphia, for the benefit of Mr. Krimmel, it is to be presented by the subscribers to the , Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. A Juror'j Excuse.— At the London Sessions on the 4th Dec. on the names of the gentlemen summoned to serve on the Petit Jury being called over, one claimed to be excused, on th e ground that lie had only been married the day before, and was by no means in a fit condition to deliberate upon a jury. The court seemed to be startled at this novel objection ; but upon a moment’s consideration, they allowed it to be a good one, and excused the individual, A Louisville Kentucky, paper of the 15th June says, that specie is selling in that place at ah advance of from 45 to 46 per cent, and United States Bank bills at 48 per cent, when payable in Common wealth or Kentucky Bank paper. The Grocers of New-York have had a meeting, and agreed to follow the example of the Dry Goods and Ilard f Ware Merchants, relative to purchas ing goods at auction. OP BONAPARTE. The last advices from St. Helena were to the 31st of March. At that time Bonaparte was indisposed ; but not to such a degree as to cause the slightest apprehension for his life. In the case of the death of Bonaparte at St. Helena, his body is to be embalm ed, and sent to England, to satisfy the world that no violence has been inflict ed upon him. [Boston Centinel. In NeW-England, they are bring ing Judges to Judgment. A Judge of Massachusetts was lately cashiered; and a number of citizens of Grafton county, New-Hampshire, have prayed for the impeachment of their Judge of Probate.—Their complaint is, that his conduct is seriously alarming to all « who have had the misfortune to live or die within his jurisdiction." Mew-Hampshire Salaries recently fixed. —Governor, R 12,00. Secretary, g3OO. Treasurer, 600. Attorney Gen eral SBOO, 60 of which to be deducted for every term of the Supreme Court he shall not attend. Pay of members, 2 dollars per day.—President and Speaker, 50 per diem.—Clerks the same. We observed, by an advertisement in a Philadelphia paper that a company is formed in that city by the title of the“ East-Florida Coffee-land Associa tion"; that most of the shares of their stock are disposed of; and that tuev will want a vessel from 45 to 50 tons, and drawing not more than 6 feet water* Horrid Murder ! About midnight ou Sunday last a white man named Saunders, living 17 miles up the Augusta road, was shot ueail in his house by a negro fellow sup posed to belong to a Mr. Brown, in or about Augusta, and known by the name ol Essex. Mr. Saunders was called to the back door by the fellow, and as he opened it received the contents of a musket or fowling piece into his head, and dropped dead on the bed from whence he had just risen, and where lay his wife and three infant children. On Mrs. Saunders screaming, the fellow who had entered the house seiz ed her by the throat, and seated her on a bench, threatened that she should share the fate of her husband if she stirred or made the least noise, and in this situation was she forced to remain for a quarter of an hour while he was searching for plunder. He first secur ed well the outer door, opening into the public road, then lit a fire from a smok ing pot which was in the house aud with ! the greatest coolness and deliberation : proceeded to his search for money. Finding but two dollars, he became en raged against the terrified woman and threatened her with instant death, if she did not discover more or tell him where the pocket book was. He how- j : ever found that empty, and then de- I | manded “ the two watches” and with these and the two dollars departed | through the back door. The poor woman whose agony for her hus band's melancholy fate had been ab sorbed in the terror that was incessant* i ly excited for her own life and that of | her sleeping children, Was now left a prey to the dreadful feelings whicii the i scene before her was calculated to in- | spire. The murderer is well known on the 1 | Augusta road, and it is believed will i ! soon be apprehended. The circum- i , stances must stimulate to extraordina- j I r J vigilance in pursuing him. He is a • stout made man, and is supposed to be ■ i the same who knocked a black boy oft' j his horse and l obbed him of his saddle ! bags the afternoon before. He is said to have been recently employed on the middle ground road of Effingham Couii- I ty in erecting a house for Low, Wal- ! lace & Co. Fhe distressed widow says i j that she had seen him before, and that ! i he stopped at her house not long since, j i when she supposes he discovered the watches hanging over the chimney piece. j So horrid a transaction has seldom occurred in our community, and we sin- I cercly hope that before this time the murderer is in the hands of justice. [Savannah Republican. | Munh r ! —Early yesterday morning, ! a murder - was committed on Charles- j ton Neck, on the King-street road, a short distance above the lines, on the person of Christian Clawson. —The horrid deed was committed by a man named Paul Lawrence, a Taylor by trade, by stabbing the man with,a small clasp knife, in the left breast, so as to cause his instant, death, Os the cause which led to this diabolical transac tion, we are wholly uninformed.—The | perpetrator of the deed was inline i diatelv taken into custody, and com mitted to prison, to await his trial at the October Sessions. [Charleston Courier, 7th inst. MORE COUNTERFEITS. Five several plates have recently been engraved for a fellow calling him self Doctor Charles Jas. Stewart, from Lynchburgh, in Virginia, at the coun terfeiting establishment in Canada; four of which are of the following de scription and denomination, viz:—a 850 bill on the Bank of Kentucky; 85 bill on the Bank, or State Bank of Tennessee; one other bill, on the Sav annah or Augusta Bank, the one how ever, ot which Mr. Moore is cashier; and 8100 on the Bank of Louisiana.— This Uoctor Stewart has probably assu med this name, among others. He is supposed to be 35 to 40 years of age, sandy hair almost red, round faced and much freckled, blue eyes and rattier round shouldered, sometimes well and at other times meanly clad. Doctor Stewart had with him, it is supposed, a large amount of counterfeit notes on other banks, and a rush is probably in tended to be made in the southern and western states with a new description of counterfeit bills. [Burlington, Vt. June 22. CRUELTY. A man was brought to the N. Y. po lice office, who had a cow and a calf at the Fly Market, for sale. Several of our citizens observed that tile cow apparently had a large bag of milk; and, the calf not sucking, had the curi osity to examine it, and discovered that its tongue was tied at the roots, so as to prevent its sucking,— The man, together with the cow and calf, were brought to the police, and the string was taken from off the tongue of the calf. The Iman was committed for maiming and cruelly treating the beast, and for the inteat to cheat and defraud. Xiaiest liWwcpooA. Nsw-Yoitit, July 4. The ship Atlantic, Capt. Matlock, arrived here yesterday, s:ii!ed from Liverpool on the 30tli of Mat, and brings &c. eight days later than per former Arrivals. — The contents of these papers are quite un. interesting ; hu' the editors of the Gazette give from them, as well as from Prices Cur ri’a’, such extracts a* are worthy of notice. There had been only three arrivals at Liver pool from the United States for a vyeek pre vious to the departure Os the Atlantic, and no sailings. From the preparations which were mak- ] ing in London, it appears probable that the Coronation of the King will take place about the middle of July. The day has not yet been fixed. The Court of King’s Bench have senten ced Mr. Hunt,|of the Examiner, to 12 months’ imprisonment, for a libel. Thomas Fltndel, editor of the Western Luminary, was sen tenced to 13 months’, imprisonment for a li bel on thf Queen. The barony of Galway, in the county of Kilkenny, and the barony of Upper Ossory, Ireland, are nearly in a state approaching to rebellion—so much so, that the peace pre servation act has been put in force in those districts. A statue to the memory of the late Mr. West is to be erected in St. Paul’s business before parliament. A bill for the mitigation of the punish ment for forgery, is now before the House of Commons, and promises to make consi derable alterations in the statute book. The punishment for forgery is to be hard labor for ten years. The committee of the House of Com mons on foreign trade, have come to the following resolutions :—Uesolved, That it is expedient to permit his majesty’s subjects to carry on trade and traffic, uirectiy and circuitously between any port within the limits of the East India Compuny’s charter, (except the dominiups of the Emperor of China) and any port or ports, beyond the hums ot the said charter, belonging to any I sl » te or countries in tmitv with luo Majesty. The royal assent has been giVvn Vo the | timber duties regulation bills. 1 The following summary of news we have copied from the Liverpool Courier of the i 30th of May. I * hi? Paris papers of Friday have been re ceived. The j Marquis of Casa-Yrujo is nominated minis ; tei ' plenipotentiary to the Court of Paris. News naS been received at Constantino ; pie, that the insurgents of Wallucllik and Moldavia are hopeless of all support from Russia, and knowing also tfie intrigues of j the partisans in the capital bad wholly fad ed, were laying down their arms, and ac q.nesing quieily in the yoke they had at , tempted to shake off. In the Mures, on tiie i contrary, rebellion was in full activity, though i little tear was entertained of its ultimate re j duet ioni ! Hie reported illness of Bonaparte had j excited some attention in England. A ves sel had arrived, which left St. Helena 56 dsys previous to the 25th May, and report ed that on the day she sailed, Bonaparte, who had been seriously ill for some days, had, most unexpectedly, sent for Sir Hud son Lowe, the Governor, and liis dissolution was not expected to he fur distant.
