AUGUSTA HEItALD. TUESDAY, AUGUST 7, 1821. OUR mercantile friends, will per- C» ive by reference to our columns, that th ere has been an improvement in low an l middling qualities of Cotton, of l-4d. per lb. since our last quotations fisom Liverpool prices. WE have not any foreign intelli g( nee of a warlike nature, more than a confirmation of the sanguinary dis position evinced by the Turks. How far Russia and Austria may coalesce for the difence of the Greeks, is not yet promul go ted—certain it is, they design some stop towards an over throw of Turkish po .ver—whether the Greeks will derive any material advantage from such dis i.tterestedness, is riot a question of much speculation; but, that a nation, which has so long been hostile to the Christi an world, should be overthrown, is an event much to be desired by all the friends of civilization. The King of England was crowned on the 19th ult. Afs will appear by the Royal proclama tion published to-day. ( THE health of our city, we are hap py to state is not as bad as has been ♦sported ; and although we admit by tire Sexton’s report, the interment of forty-one persons for the last month, yet it falls far short of the busy ac counts which have gone into the up (touritry. At present our city is consi dered as healthy, as is usual at tins Season of the year. The following is the Sexton’s report from the “ Chroni cle.” DeatMk in the City of Augusta for 'he month ending July 51, 1821. Whites.—\ 1 under ten years. 12 from 18 to 42. 1 aged 60. 1 Ditto 62. Singular indeed, if true. — It is a singular fact, and one that is highly creditable to the county of Newport, that there is not at present, or has been for several weeks past, any person, ei ther debtor or criminal, confined in tiie jail of this county. Intemperance. — The Coroner of New York was called on the 13th iust. to view the bodies of Eleanor Crainer and John Hutton, both found dead. Ver dict of the jury in both cases, came to their death by intemperance. There have been exported from Con don to the Italian markets, since the sth of January, 63.700 quarters of bonded wheat, and 41,600 quarters have been exported in the same time from outports. LIGHTNING. On Tuesday evening, the 26th idt. a violent thunder storm passed over the towns of Broodalbin and Galw iy. In the latter town a barn fcelongius to Mr. John Dean, situated but a snort distance from his house, was struck with lightning and entirely cons;mud, together with a considerable quantity ot wool, flax, and fanning utensils, to-a considerable amount. It was with much ditHculty his house and other buildings Were saved from the devouring element. How long will people ueglect to place the certain and necessary defences a gainst lightning upon their buildings ? A trifling expense would ensure not only the buildings, but thq lives of such persons as may happen to be sheltered in them—and is certainly deserving of more attention than it commonly re ceives. [Johnstown llep. MURDER. On Saturday night last, a man named Thomas Richardson, was murdered at Freeman’s old tavern on the new bridge, road, about 5 miles from this city, by Alien King, a county constable. .It appears they had been playing cards, when one accused the other of cheat ing, a quarrel arose, and they went out and fought; after being separated ! King drew a pistol and shot Richard son through the head, which killed him on tiie' spot—King lied, but informa tion of the horrid transaction being sent to our police ollicers, they suc ceeded in apprehending him in this city yesterday morning. King is a good looking man, and it is said b itli he and his victim heretofore enjoyed excellent characters. Richardson has left a wife \ and several children, and King is but ! recently married. What ail awful i warning to gamblers and men of high i : passion. SHOCKING DEPRAVITY. A boy not 11 years of age, is m vin the cage, (confined in the same cell with King,) waiting his trial for rob bing the Presbyterian church of billies, 1 i hymn books, &c. [Richmond 1). Ada. mnai AN IMPOSTOR. Wishin/ to excite public sympathy arid charity, made his appearance at the Me/or’s office, on Tuesday morn mg,.pledging that he had been robbed the Previous night., about 10 o’clock on I thqf‘Washington road, at the identical ; place where Seaicr was murdered. The appearance of the man and the "variety of statements were such as to 1 leave no doubt of the falsity of the tale, and the motives which dictated them; we were therefore sorry to see that the i Gazette had inadvertently save air rency to the falsehood, as it tends to • create unnecessary alarms, and might possibly affect,' in some measure/ tiie intercourse with the neighboring towns. An Impostor, who as often com nits petty larceny, as lie tells tales of bring robbed, hail led to the fable of “ ano ther robbery,” in an Alexandria paper. We hope his coinage will not circulate beyond the District. Editors eager for neics, are liable to such impostures. [Washington-City Gaz. w—d ntnmrnm It has been suggested to it's, in order to facilitate the detection of the mur derers of the unfortunate Sea veil, that the President of the United States forthwith offer, by proclamation, a free pardon, in addition to the reward al ready advertised, to any accomplice, or accessary, to the mufder, who will disclose the tact; so that a more speedy detection may follow, and the lav/ be duly executed upon the guilty: no means should be left, untried to accom plish the ends of justice, so long as such a horrid outrage remains unpunished. [lbid. SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. New-York, July 20. Early yesterday morning, a genteel ly dressed man hired a farmer near i tiie Hamilton Monument to row him I over to the city. On his arrival he took I otf his clothes and sunk them, and put | on a fisherman’s dr'ess, shaved his head, : and came into the city. j Tiie Whaling ship Iris has arrived at j New Bedford from the coast rif Chili, j which she left as late as the 28th of A pril. The captain makes the following : report-: j “ The United States ship Constella tion, capt. Ridgeley, left Uoquitnhu for St. Mary’s in pursuit of the captives ! from ship Hero, capt. Ru sell. In her passage fell in with capt. Covil, in the i ship Parnasso, put an officer and s?v -! erai inert on board of him, and ordered him into the harbor of St Mary’s to see if they could learn any thing of the sufferers; but on their arrival found the English ship Perseverance, capt. Clark, hauled oh shore and stripped; her casks and other articles strewed a long share. They went on board of her, but were obliged to leave her di rectly, as they were fired upon from tiie shore by the Spaniards. F ; then immediately gel under weigh and came out without gaining any intelligence (,f the ships company.” Major Andre. Tilt Duke, of York, in compliance with the suggestions of the British Consul in this city, has ordered him, to cause the remains of the late Major Andre to be disintered, and sent in a ship of war to England, to be buried in Westminster Abbey, near the mo i nument long since erected to his memory. This act of justice, to the memory of a gal rant and unfortunate victim, should not have been so long deferred by his government. Had Vo fallen in battle, it would have been tiie duty and the pleasure of a civilir.ed peo ple to ha*e paid due honor to his remains, but as Ins eUI was ignominious, and admit ted by the law 0 f nati msand of war to have been just, any public military demonstrations of respect would V>e a reflection on the il lustrious members of the court martial who condemned him, and the great father of his country and of virtue, who ordered him to be executed. The great ends of public jus tice having been answered, ahd the liberties of this country probably preserved by the example, private sympathy lias free scope to lament the fate of this gallant and accom plished young man, who was sacrificed by the triator Arnold, and fell victim to a mis taken sense of duty, in his attempt to crush the rising independence of our country. His accomplishments, gallantry, and mag nanimity, created him many friends and ail, ' mirers ; and, as the grave has cancelled his ' crime, and absorbed all national animosities, ' his remains are entitled to the respect of the ! libera', the humane, and the magnanimous. ; Let them be peaceably transferred to his native country, and receive those honors which that country is in honor bound to pay to the unfortunate victim of its own policy. ..hi i —— [From the Hampden (Mass.) Federalist.] no. VO UR. ill LB. JOHJV A IJAAtS. A letter from the Ex-President Adams has been published in an Albany paper, ad dressed to Mrs. Emma Willard, in which I Mr. A. commends very highly, Mr. Soutli i wick’s address to tile apprentices of Alba ! ny, which, it seems, had been sent him by Mrs. W. Mr. A. speaks of Sermons by Doctor But. ler, Bishop of Bristol, winch he thinks the profoutidest essays, on morul subjects, tin t are to be found in any language, and Doctor ; Barrow’s five Sermons upon luidjtrv, who I he calls the greatest effort, of genius that | ever was displayed upon any single human i duty and virtue. Mr. /. then speaks,of ■ defense of the coivdlnuion, aiid lleuires it j may be rcmeit.fl-red that. three volumes I Were read by Messrs, Jay, Hamilton and I Madison, before the Federalist was begun. Ilis letter concludes thus : “ the work is unpolished, ill digested and uncouth, A work was written in fifteen mootin' which ought to have employed twen ty years. Nevertheless, it utters a solemn I Warning voice to all glen to beware of the aw ful dangers which surround every form of re publican g .vern. On their return to town the i sartie evening, they weie dismissed at the } market square, after receiving the Blanks of the corporation, through its chief officer, who ever since the unfortunate occurrence, has shown the greatest activity and real, in pursuing to its source every suspicious cir cumstance connected with that diabolical transaction, and more recently in taking ev ery step which caution or prudence could suggest to prevent a repetition of deeds so foul and disgraceful, Alexandria Herald. New Yomr, July 21. ARTFUL VtLLMJVr. A theft was committed yesterday by a 1 gang ot boys, in a manner which lor' cun ning and adroitness, will compare with any of tiie most ingenious tricks of the veteran culprits in the populous cities of Europe. As the lady of a house in Greenwich street was flatting at breakfast in the back piazza, a lad decently dressed, rushed in at the front door, crying, and ran through the hall. Im mediately two other boys presented them selves at the front door and called to him to come along. On the lady’s inquiring what was the matter, the lad told her mat the boys at die door wanted to whip him. They de nied it, and said he had run away, and their boss bad sent them to bring him liome. I'he lady in a kind manner advized him to go, winch advice after hanging about the eutry for some time, he complied with; but not without having in course of tiie altercation and confusion which he had created, slily slipt into the front parlor and fastened his little thieving hooks upon a pair of silver pint mugs. These he contrived to hold be fore him in such a manner, with Ins face partly turned towards tiie entry wall, and moving towards the dour apparently very reluctantly, for fear his companions in equi ty would give him a hiding, succeeding in escaping with his plunder. LOCK JAW. Case of Teanus, or Lock-Jaw, cured by a very large quantity of Tincture of Opi um (laudanum) given by i*istake. Dr. Hail, a physician at Berwick, has communicated an extraordinary case of this kind, in a late number of the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal : Dr. Hall says, “ By a very singular mis take notwithstanding the written directtoi-s were veiy correct, n appeared that tlie per sons enlr’.sted with their administration had completely reversed them; and instead of giving him a tea spoonful of the purgative electuary '.-very hour and rubbing in a table Bpoonf';, of the embrocation,* every hour, (they had caused him to su>aUvv> a table spoonful of the embrocation every two hours and had rubbed the electuary on ins breizt I Upon visiting hurt next m truing at 9 o'clock, we were surprised to ti nl tin the electuary , which we supposed had been taken, Iral produced no effect upon tht bowe's, until we discovered it had been us ed externally ; but we were still more sur prised to fi.iJi tWt the Whole of the embro cath n, with the exception of about one spoonful, had been swallowed in the course of the night, in which he bail taken nearly turn, sauces ('Jour table epaoafuUs J ot the tincture of 07 urn. The spasms at the pe riod of our visit, were perfectly relieved,” and the man, got quite well in a few days. The abovf; quantity of laudanum, though given by mistake, pretty accurately c »rres peuds with the quantity which Dre Morri son, in his Treatise on Tetanus strongly re commends, find in the details of the above ci’se, in the Edinburgh Journal, Dr. Morri son's views of this disease arc highly com plimented. * The embrocation consisted of two ounces an l a half of laudanun, anil two drachms of camphorated spirit, and as much ether.
