DIICOVGRKp UY A WOMAN.
Another great discovery has been
made and thnt too by a lady In this
country. "Disease fcatened Its clutches
upon her snd for seven years a,w with
stood Its severe tests, but her vltst or
gana were utiderrnkied and death seem
ed Imminent. For three months ehe
coughed Incessantly and could not
steep. She finally discovered a way to
recovery by purchasing of us a bottle
of Ur. King’s New Discovery for Con
sumption asxf woo so much relieved ntr
taking the first dose that six- slept all
night; and with two bottles has been
absolutely cured. Her name Is Mrs.
Luther Luts. Thus writes W. C. Ham

CONVICTED QUICKLY.
Why a New' Trial Was Ciranted In the
Caae.
Marlon, S. C.. July 12. A negro
woman and a colored boy about 12
yearn old, somewhat undergrown, were
tried on the Ma-,lon sessions Friday and
convicted of feloniously burning the
residence of Mr. M. It. Hamer of Little
Rock.
Judge Gary yesterday set aside the
verdict and granted a new trial on the
giound that the evidence which the Ju
ly based its finding was Improper and
should have been excluded. It seems
that a motive for the crime was not
sufficiently proved against the accus
ed, and the only criminating evidence
referred to the discovery of foot tracks
on the premises corresponding to those
of the prisoners. In order to demon
strate the identity of the tracks one of
the vdtnesses for the prosecution had
Incautiously thrust the hoy’s feet into
them and this stroke of detective fi
nesse proved fa<al to the competency
of the evidence. Judge Gary’s decis
ion was cleat and decisive and con
firmee! among those who heard Its an
nouncement the favorable impiession
of his ability and fairness. There is
naturally a strong feeling of sympathy
for Mr. Hamer, who ts a citizen of
high character and deservedly enjoys
the esteem of the community. Sev
eral months ago **e had to suffer the
amputation*of an arm in consequence
of a wound Inflicted by an accidental
discharge of his gun. To this misfor
tune has been added the destruction of
his dwelling by fire under circumstan
ces that make It appear to have been
an act of incendiarism. It is not sur
prising that the prosecution seems to
have been somewhat precipitate.

Fred Dunlap, a prosperous colored
man living near Magnolia, was the vic

night last. He found a notice pasted
on a tree a short distance from his
house that he would be “cleaned out''
that night, but paid no attention to It.
A short time after dnrk. about 15 or
16 men come Into his yard. Dunlap
seeing them first and fearing bodily
harm, ran off. and In the darkness
made his escape.
The party then set fire to his cotton
house, which was burnt together with
a shed room ond buggy shed, a two
horse wagon and harness, eight sacks
of fertiliser, about 20 pieces of home
roieed meat, and « barrel of rice end
several other articles of more or less
value.
Th#y th#n turned their attention to
his barn, and were preparing to apply
the torch, when Dunlap's son fired into
the crowd, which caused them to scat

and told Dunlap's wife that they
would come again in a few days and
finish up with him.
The party from whom the above was
obtained did not know if ttny of the
outlaws were recognized hy Dunlap’s
