Perhaps the meat notewor thy was that of appointing a day on which all Augusta shall do a general cleanlrg up of yards and streets. This will be ti kind of city holiday. like Ar bor Day, and will soon become a recog nized Institution. It is probable that some day the latter part of ttvta month will he appointed, after which AugUßta will have the appearance of having put on a fresh summer dress. The three nteotbfrf. from the house appar ently ajph obi'll 'the subject without spe cial leaning on either side. Mr. Flem ing, democrat, of Georgia, who intro duced the resolution which set the com mission In motion, asserts thai he has no preconceived ideas cn the question. He became convinced during the de bate that the Loud bill was defeated because congress iielieved. Justly or un justly, that the real Bource of leakage in the postal business came from the railroad rates and not from second class matter. If that is so, the coun try should know It. Mr. Fleming says, nnd he also declares that be approaches the study of the question with none of the populistic prejudice against corporations. He is here a good lawyer and a worker. / w / ” Mr. Catching*, dem/v-rat, of Missis sippi. is also a mat y who holds »he scales evenly balanced. Mr. Moody of Massachusetts, the third member, says he has never given the question the slightest attention and the appointment name to him as r>. great surprise. He feels strongly, however, there Is a prevalent suspicion, which In Justice to both sides should be either austaitiedl or abandoned. ' If (he railroads are receiving only fair compensation, as their representa tives maintain, It is very unfor.unate to have congress and the public half suspicious all the time that such is not the case. If on she other hand, they ore overpaid, In plain justice to the taxpayer this cannot be ascertained any too soon. It is believed here that Mr. Moody wjll approach the subject with absolute fairness and that tots conclu sions will be intelligent and entirely judicial, as that is the way he Is in tbij habit of treating free seed distribu-1 tions, contested election cases and fedX era! apprapriations.
