Folded Hands.
Albert Bigelow Paine.
Dear, patient hands, that tolled so
hard for me.
At rest before me now I see them
lying;
They tolled so hard, and yet we could
not see
That she was dying.
Poor, rough, red hands, that drudged
the livelong day,
Still busy when the midnight oil was
burning;
Oft tolling on until she saw the gray
Of dey returning.
It I could sit aud hold those tired
hpmds.
And feel the warm lifeblood within
them hentlng.
And gaze with her among the twilight
lands,
Some whispered words repeating.
I think tonight that I would love her
so.
And I could tell my love to her so
truly,
That e’en though tired she would not
wish to go
And leave me thus unduly.
Poor, tired heart, that had so weary
grown
Thot death came all unheeded o’er It
creeping.
How still It is to sit here all alone
While she is sleeping.
Dear, patient heart, that deemed the
heavy care
Of drudging household toll its high
est duty;
That laid aside Its precious yearning
there
Alone with beauty.
Dear heart nnd hands, fso pulseless,
still, and cold. a

In Mount Vernon Cemetery, near
Boston, up among the old t.mc-worn
tom lie. marking a score or more of
years, are to be found two gems of past
pathetic fervor, not to be exoelied. The
first—
Where living men my bones do view.
Remember wedl, here’s room for you.
*
This last Is practical, straight to the
point, and should serve gay, thought
less mortals with an object lesson,
while It also serves as an excellent foil
to'this rather classical one, found not
a stone's throw from tbe first —
The room below, flamed like a stone,
Anxious for those who slept above,
iShe entered In the trembling floor.
She fell, she sank, she rose no more.
Away out in the Hoosier state, in a
little village near Indianapolis, there is
an Ivy grown picturesque green grave
yard. worth going a long ways to see.
' Hero are two epitaphs t taken from
I rough grey stones, placed there by lov-
I ing hands, the owners of which proba
jbly wrote them for the village stone
cutter out of the fullness of their sor
rowing hearts, which possibly inspired
them to Ihe two crude efforts at poetry
found in the following:
His languishing head Is at rest,
Its thinking and achins is o’er,
His calm immovable breast
Will heave to flutter no more.
And the other —
My staff and stay is took
And I am left alone;
My husband dear, who was so near,
Is took away and gone.
I think it Is best to look on the
brightest side of everything, even epi
taphs. and possibly tbe owners of the
above odd memorials glean as much
comfort from them as the owners of
expensive monuments covered with the
highest eulogies and most correct phras
ing and ideas.
