every passer seeking food or the street

cause much sickness. The gutters are
full of refuse, the chicken coops foul,
and the air full of odors!!! Shall thla

Assemble For a Collective Photo
graph This Afternoon.
About half past one o’clock this af
ternoon about one hundred of the little
negro beys who daily rush out of The
Herald alley yelling "Exua!" in va
rious degrees of shrillness assembled to
have a collective picture “took." The
pushing of the butt m. go to speak, »vas
easy enough, but the collecling and
grouping of the gamins was a different
thing.
They scrambled, fought and yelled
for the beßt olaces In the foreground,
and there wasn't a single pair of shoos
or stockings in the whole crowd. Each
was supplied with a copy of the latest
"Extra!" and finally, with the assis
tance of several stalwart cops, the
group was quieted, they were told to
remain perfectly still, each one to shut
his mouth tight and roll (he white of
his eyes. •
The slide was pushed into the camera
—the photographer held up his hand
for a moment —and It was over. A
mighty roar went up, the beys tumbled
down the steps and away they went,
each one yelling at the top of his
voice.
