a consolation to know that recovery
a ft or a case of malaria may ha rapid
and that th* dingy re effects th* con
stitution less *wU>usly than other le
vers of equal temperature and duration.
Malaria is not contagious. The means
of It# distribution have been sought for
In the air and water, but Koch believe*
thet Mood-socking Insects are largely
responalble for Its dissemination.
Wherever mosquitoes exist malaria
will prevail. Where there are no mos
quitoes. cases of malarial disease occur
only when the infection has been pre
viously received In a malarial locality.
The exact relation of mosquttoe* to ma
laria still lacks, however, exact and
conclusive scientific demonstration. An
nlfftes are found where blood-sucking
Insects convey disease germs, as. for
instance, the tsetse fly, and especially
the Texas fever among cattle, whereas,
is well known, the disease germ ia car
ried by a tick, or insect
No race of man is Immune from ma
larial disease. Negroes living on the
coasts of tropical countries are practi
cally so, but negrops of the same rare
from mountainous districts coming to
the coast ure susceptible to the fever.
The former have, according to the opin
ion of Dr* Koch, acquired immunity
through slight tnularial qttacks dur
ing Infancy or youth. But, as there is
this naturally produced immunity, it
must be possible to produce an artifi
cial one.
On this point Dr. Koch Insists that in
the case of malarial disease, the ex
citing cause of which is definitely
known, the conditions are much leas
difficult than in the case of other dis
eases, the germs of which are not
known, as, for Instance, hydrpphobia
and cattle plague (rinderpest), in re
spect to which a certain degree of im
munity has nevertheless been attained.
The first essential step in comhat
iug the disease is for the patient to
leave immediately the malarial-infected
district, and be protected against mos
quito bites by prophylactic doses of
quinine. Prof. Koch believes that

For fear the moon ahoutd shine atone,

That walks beneath their fight.
And breathes the love against thy

I saw thee, lovely Ines. V
Descend along the shore, v -y
With bands of noble gentlemen,
And banners waved before:
And gentle youth and maidens gay,
And showy plumes they wore;
It would have been a beauteous dream,
If it had been no more.
Alas, alas, fair Tnes, V v
She went away with song, \
With music w-alting on her steps.
And shoutings of the throng;
But some were sad and felt no irurth,
But cmly music's wrong,
