Ed Daggett Who Was Riding: on
Freight Box.
A colored man by the name of Ed
Daggett fell from the top of a freight
car In th; Georgia railroad yards this
morning anti sustained, as it was first
thought, quit* severe injuries. The
man lay insensible for u Utile while,
but through the ministrations of cer
tain embryo doctors in the crowd, who
logoned his collar band and cliatad his
head with water, he was brought to
Foruntately no limbs were broken and
at the end of an hour he was able to

The Herald I vis tackled and over
come many things, but yesterday af
ternoon waa the first time that it has
run up against nine bulldogs. The Her
ald prevailed, however, In spite of the
awe-inspiring appellation of Its oppon
ents. The contest was a baseball game
between The Herald carriers' team on
one side «nd the bulldogs on the other.
The game was played on tire Richmond
academy diamond, and was witnessed
by a number of spectators.

USHERS MINSTREL SHOW.
It Will Be Repeated for the Benefit of
Soldiers’ Relief Fund
Bvcryhody remembers with pleasure
the ushers' minstrel which was given
last sluing In the opera house, by the
hoys who have acted as ushers for the
past year. This performance, added to
and embellished, will be given ngain In
the course of the next two weeks nt the
opera house. The proceeds derived from
the repetition of the ploy are In be do
nated to the soldiers' relief fund. Tt Is
a meritorious step on the part of tho
hoys, and they deserve patronage and
encouragement.

A decided fell in temperature has
occurred over the entire northwest
country. Bismarck during th;? night

The rainfall over the cotton belt in

ble. Nobod ■ here l»elieved that the
British govstnment wcultl pay any at
tenifon to Mr. Cunninghamo-Graham's
demand for an InvesUgaticn. but since
London press dispatches say that the
inquiry will be made, the navy de
partment has preparcel a statemant on
ihe subject. This statement, wihich
was completed today from the muster
rolls cf Dewey's squadron, covering \be
date of the engagement with the Span
ish fleet, shews that of tho 1.145 men
on the American sb'ps only 67 «' ’re
aliens, ami of these only 8 were British
subjects. Four of the British on
the Olympia and four cn th? Raleigh.
Not one of the eight is a gunner. They
were ordinary seamen, a carpenter's
mate, a coal passer and a water tender.
Thirty-one of the 67 aliens were Chi
nese mess attendants and cooks. These
St are the men in whose behalf Admi
ral Dewey has recommended a special
provision of law’ to enable them to be
ccrae American citizens.

Summerville Liner Ran Over a Sleep
ing Dog Last Night.
A late ear coming down from Sum
merville last'night ran over a large
dog on McKinna street near Greene and
killed it. The. dog was lying on the
track asleep and was not discovered
by the metorman until the car was
almost upon him. The brakes were put
cn and the bell was rung, but the ac
cident occurred nevertheless.

Arrest of the Chief Put an End to the
Midnight Robberies.
Tho report book at police headquar
ters today shows no cases reported,
which is a most excellent record. There
have been no burglaries committed
within the past twenty-four hours.

Large Crowds Paying Their City
Taxes at Treasurers Ottice.
Today is the last day for paying city
taxes and that portion cf the ri.?ar peo
ple who do not attend to this business
today will have fines to pay. The
crowd at the city treasurer's office to
day has been a tremendous one and
the gentlemen who look after affairs
around there are working hard.
The prayer meeting at St. Johns
church at 9:30 tonight will be lead by
