Ruches and Feather Boas.
There ,g no need cf smart little neck
arrangements to be worn with street
gt vns, and women are so aecus omed
now to muffling their necks that it will
be seme time before the fashion goes
«ntlr» !;• out of style. Many of the col
lars arc really small capes. They are
made of ruffles of lace, chiffon, or
mousseline de sole, pleated very fine
and put on a fitted lining of silk or
satin.
Ostrich-feather boas have for some
time been said to be out of style;, hut
lodging from the quantities that are j
tor sale, as well as the numbers that
are worn, it is safe to say the assertion
1s unfounded. For between seasons,
and cn a coo! day in summer, there is ,
no hing pleasnntef to wear than one |
of these same bods. They come in
black, in the natural feathers, in
brown, nnd in light gray. Light gray
is especially effective, and Is very
much worn v.'ih dark tailor gowns.
The long boas that come as far as the

Mow Dewey Saved the Summer Girl
From tho Fireside Companion.
As this summer approached, it

; and towns, shelling our seaside hotels
and villas, and driving us far into the

! Proprietors of seaside resorts and
amusements consulted their lawyers as

summer dresses, no summer season.
But when June came matters rhanged
for the better. The sun shone out and
brightened everything and everybody.
Dewey had proved that tr-Spanisb fleet
could be smashed as easily as a basket

had been hovering along our coasts
wore bottled up in Santiago de Cuba.
Then the summer girl plucked up heart
and orb red her seaside costumes, stop

adieu to the brave boys who marched
or sailed off to the front. Presently
the railway stations were blockaded
with express wagons, laden with those
