The Testimony Befin.
Before beginning 11.? questioning of
Letter Currier Corley, Mr. Wright Ha
ted that for the past eigh’"*i cr twen
ty months one of the moat upright and
honorable of the tltlriu of Augusta,
a physician elso. had been persecuted
and maligned to an extent and In sect
a manner as was almost Impoeilble to
d-scrlb?. He had been th-* viet'm of
anonymous lettTs the crotents of
which w.-re vile in the extreme, and
calculated net alone to distress and
worry the object of their attack, but to
outrage the entire com unity. So fla
grant had been there continued attacks
that not only were th.: local and state
officials besought cad apptak'J to, but
the Unit til States government finally
sent cnc of Its most efficient and
trusted officers to ferret out the miic.e.
ant. The officer has been engaged la
bis task for months and at lost his la*
dus-.ry has been rewarded by the de
tection aud appr. h nelon. in the wry
act, of the individual who was now at
the bar chrrgcd with the crime. Ow
ing the shrewdness and subtlety of the
accused it was only within a few days
that cvUVnce was secured that wer
ran'ed her arrest.
He would show, Mr. Wright con'in
ued, that Mrs. Gleasca was conversant
with the cojt-at* of the letters from
the fact that in certain instances, when
suspected ’■ '.tors had been withheld for
a short time by the authorities. before
being delivered to the parties to whom
they wove eddreered, she had visited
Hr. Maicno and comm-nted on the
c 'Titcats and nature of the epistles,
even before they bad br.?n received, act
knowing that they had been purposely
retained. Mr. Wright closed h!a pre
liminary remarks .vlthvtbe etglear.cat
that, the motive, the source or ’nsplra
tlm fer this malignant and rnstalr.ed
attack, must be left for further Inves
tigation.
Mr. Curley stated that on the morn
ing rs July 28th last at 7:10 c-'clock.
Mrs. Glen-on emerged from her house
rr.d after glancing up and down the
street, set cut at. a brisk c/alk towards
the Greene street bridge over the ca

Upcn reselling a mail box at a
or more distant from her home, the-e
b"'ng at least two mail boards within
a "block- or sc of her house, she stopped
cr/J aft r furtively glancing around,
r.s if Io see if she were unobserved, she
d-apped one Mter Into the box and in
'Joins so dropped two additional

It was stated that the doctor had

Mr. Cohen In his cross-examination
of Mr. Curley was quite sarcastic and

Mr. Curley testified to rtmainlng for

Mr. Coh.-n here requested the stenog

testimony.
Mr. Curley was on the stand for an

Mr. Curl:y’s last evident.? was in re

Mr. Cohen’s, the response being that
while the witness could not swear that
the tfcr-te letters in question had been

he would swear that the three letters
on top of tiie pile had been d.-posited
by her.
The Next Witness.
Inspector Barry then took the stand

He told of the various steps In the
