The appointment of W. It. Tlearsl.
the ow ner of The New York Journal, aa
ensign in the United States navy, is
not without precedent. When James
Gordon Bennett was Young Jim he had |
naval aspirations for which he was fit- I
ted by yachting experience. Ho T' e
Herald secured him an appointment as
volunteer lieutenant and he was sent to
sea In command of a dispatch hoat,
serving with the blockading squadron
off the coast of Georgia. When Savan
nah was captured the famous yacht
America was found there sunk, and Lt.
Bennett was detailed to get her up, re
fit her and tiring her to New York, says
The Times. This closed his naval lia
rcor.
Mr. Hesrst. like Mr Bennett, Is a Cor
inthian yachtsman, which means that
he Is a snlloor man and can sail and
navigate his own vessel Should tw
rush around In the naval service as he
has in the journalistic profession,
Schley. Walnwrlght, Hobson, not to say
Dewey, may look out for their laurels.
