Lcgialautre, was assassinated last night
at Giles, Chattahoochee county. He
had jest finished speaking and was
standing in a crowd listening to Wil
liam Pr.gley, his Populist opponent.
Bagiey, woo was interrupted by Jeff
Davip, a negro school Bather, also a

ed Davis down. A general fight was
precipitated. Several shots were fired.
Adams was instantly kilied. One shot
entered the temple and one the heart.
Nobody else was .hit. Adams was very
popuiar end bitter feeling was aroused

An Exciting Bide.
Ponce, Porto Rico, U. 8. A., Aug. 24.
—Dining an attempt last night to lo
cate a Ore to the eaat of Ponce, a pla
toon of troop A, New York, under the
command of Lieut. Coudert, went to
Santa Isabel. The men had an exciting
time riding at R furious gallop after
midnight and covering twenty miles In
two hours. Lieut. Davenport tapped
the telegraph wires at several points
without locating the tire. The party
retumed this afternoon nearly exhaust
ed.
Stole Rubber Bandy

The date for the grand affair at
Jacksonville, the review of the Seventh

ing about the proposed trip to Camp
Cuba Libre and it is thought that in a
day or t-vo the railroad p»c.ple will
have their plans perfected and the rate

As General Lee is to leave for Ha
vana shortly and the war department

from the Southern camps, this will
probably be the! last opportunity to see

“The Patriotic Spirit of Bankers”
Discussed.
Denver, Aug. 24. The second day's
session of the 24th annual convention,
of the American Bankers' association
v/as called to order by President Hen
drix at ten o'clock with practically a
full attendance. Today's session will
be devoted to a discussion of practical
banking questions. There were four
general subjects under discussion, 30
minutes being h!lotted for each, and
only 5 minute speeches being allowed.
The first subject was “Tbe Patriotic
Spirit of Bankers.” The discussion was
opened by J. D. Powers, president of
the First National bank of Owensboro,
Ky.

assumed the governor's duties and
transferred the command cf the Eighth
corps to Gen. Otis. The army head
quarters remain in old Manila, the gov
ernor moving to Malacanan Palace,
outside the city walls. Major Seriven
lias been appointed the governor's sec
retary.
Gen. Otis, of California, has been or
dered to report to Gen. Anderson, and
f>n. Mac Arthur has been assigned to
tbe command of the Seomd division, i
Col. Ovensbine, of the Twenty-third j
regulars, has been assigned to com
mand of the brigade in place of Gen.
MacAruthr.
Water w as turned on today and the
relations with the insurgents have
been improved, but the rebels main
