FALL
Summer werit out In a storm of
tears. She walled and wept lsat night
as if possessed of the very spirit of
unrest.
Today she has gone into the unre
turning past.
It Is autumn.
Renewed vitality and hustle are al
ready apparent. The transformation
has been almost magical. The busi
ness year lias begun. The opinion is
almost unanimous that this is to be a
prosperous and successful year in com
mercial and Industrial circles. Au
gusta will receive more cotton than
ever before In her history, and it will
leave a proportion of profit iu all the
channels through whlct it passes.
Other business concerns which depend
upon this will prosper acordiagly. As
soon,a* the deluge Is over and the sun
shines, and the people have half a
chance to feel exuberant, the buoyant,
bustling air of the place, which is al
ready op parent, will be still more
marked, and business will hum.
Mr. Frank Simmons, who died sud

traordinary talents. He had many
friends-and admirers who will be
grieved to hear of his death.

As we rode up a pleasant faced old ]
1 man and hi* wife were reading a New j
; York paper. He rose, examined my
! pass, and iiald: “All right. Madam," ;
I and we rorled through the gateway, on ,
to the *(nooth. white road* that char

on one aide of (h - road run* the
Swanwanunod, and im the other Is a
perfect tangle of 111 kind* of flower*,
vines and shrub* from all ccuntrte*.
The rond- wind* along till you come
to a regular mountain pas*, rocky and
deep clay mud from the recent rain*.
You drive pa*t a very dilapidated house
to the poultry farm. It 1* « wonderful
sight to see the variety of, chicken*,
duck* and tut key* that are ihere.
Each variety ha* a little house of its ,
own painted yellow with red blfUds j
and a yard at the back fenced in with j
wire.
Coming Into the flue macadam road
again, the horses strike a good pace,
and soon you come to a lovely view of
the French Broad, noisily cascading
over It* toeky bed. Just here you have
a beautiful view of the white palace,
and looking Into the quiet waters of
the artificial lake you can aee a perfect
picture of Itm-flected.
From there you go on to the fish
pond and flower-gardens, and here you
begin to find those "No Thoroughfares."
which almost make you wish you had
not come.
Just outside the main entrance to the
house visitors are allowed to stop, and ]
glorious Indeed is the view to to had. j
At your feel are the U-uutiful lawns
and flower beds, and here and there a
white marble statue: farther down the
valley is the lake and the dark-green
trees, and afar off. on every side, are
the blue, hasy mountains aglow with I
the soft rays of the setting sun.
XVe drove through the gateway very
slowly to get as good a view of the
house as possible. It can scarcely to
described. Windows, turrets, steeples,
glnble*. all sorts of architecture to de
light the architect, .but all too fine for
ordinary mortals.
The fountains of nil shapes are dry.
My driver says, "they play only when
Mr. Vanderbilt is at home.”
Right in front of the house Is a ter
race, a “tarrant.” —my Solomon railed j
it, "where his lordship goes to get the |
breexe and a better view."
Then through the fragrant tangle. T j
ride home, puzzling my brain and won
dering how My Lady Vanderbilt can
prefer gay Paris to her lovely Bilt
more. L. M.
It is a matter of surprise that there
