TO FARMERS.'
Tour* is a nob If profrasto®. I will
not bf deterred from aaylng this be
cauHf ao many have aald It who wore
incapable o{ any Juw apprwiatlon of
whal they were aaylng. Many have
written and utteied It who were much
more willing that other* *hould be
farmer* than to be farmer* thom
aalvea. It is true, nevertheieas. youri
ii a noble profession. The merchant,
who brings manufacturer! good* to our
door, and sella them at a reasonable
profit and thereby lives and enable* ua
to live better than we could if we had
to go all the way to the manufacturer
for a gimlet, a plough or a piece of
calico, la doing well for the romtnnn!-
tjr. His la an honorable profnasion
and we are bound to honor him so
long as he pursue* It honorably. The
manufacturer who convert* the raw
material into the necessaries, comfort*
and ornaments of life, nod then pass
es them over to the merchant to be
distributed to all who wants, is also
doing a good work. We must honor
him so long «s he produces a good ar
ticle at a fair price. Ts by u life of
restless enterprise he becomes rich, we
will not envy him. The farmer who
produces the raw material and passes
It on to the manufacturer and through
him to the merchant, and thence to
the supply of all terrestrial wants. Is
at the foundation of the whole slrtto
ture of human society. What a pity
it would be If gome coxcomb high up
In the grades of life, as he may valnlj’
conceive, should look down and scorn
the foundation.
I can hardly forgive the man or wo
man who speaks lightly of the intelli
gence. the worth or the social Import
ance of farmets. The farmers Igno
rant! It Is Impossible. He lives
amid the communion of nature. The
common mother of us all teaches him
daily. The heavens always shine on
him. liow different with those who.
when they look up, see no heavens,
an less they can see through brick and
aiortnr!
The works of man fill all their
thought. What wonder If they fall
‘■o worship a higher god than mam
mon! The farmer communes ever with
!he works of the Almighiy. What
should hindetr him from being a rever
ent learner? He lives amid revela
tions. Ho could not he ignorant 1f he,
would. Away, away, ye profane ones,
