The Denials Entered.
About thla time the foreign repreavn
tatlves—-notably those of Germany and
Italy denied receiving any ouch doc
uments horn the accused or any other
person, but In reply (o that came the
startling Information that the docu

to convict the aecuaad had hewn stolen
from the (leak of the German military

embassy In Paris. The (text thing
that happened Inflamed the people
more than ever. It appeared that
Germany had protested, under ihre&t
of abandoning all diplomatic relations
with France, against using documents
obtained by violating tho rights of the
embassy. The people thought that
Germany was interfnrring to save a

cry for the head of Dreyfus was almost
Incessant while along with this arose
such denunciation of Germany as
threatened war within a brief period.
The condition of public sentiment on
one side and the attitude of Germany
on the other seriously embarrassed the
French government, and the state of
affairs was worse for the reason that
the cabinet were not unanimous In
their belief In the guilt of the ac

The Secret Trial
However, the trial was brought oh In
■secret, so that It should not publicly
appesr that the stolen documents were
used against the accused. Dreyfus de
nied his guilt and brought experts to
combat the testimony of those who
swore the documents were in his writ
ing, hut without avail. The court, when
the ease was ended, retired for an hour,
ami then came back to the place of
trial and unanimously declared that the
accused was guilty of “having given
to s foreign power documents concern
ing the national defence.’'
The public had been admitted to hear
the verdict, although Dreyfus was not
present, and when it was pronounced
there were loud cries of “Viva la Pa
trie!”
Then the President of the court said;
“Th esentenee is that Capt. Dreyfus
be Imprisoned for life In a fortified,
place,'"
Dreyfus heard both the verdict aud

THE OUTLOOK BRICIHT.
What President Bloomfield Sgya of
the Situation.
Athens, Oa., Kent. 5 —Mr. Tt. tt.
Bloomfield, president of the Star Thread
company, of Rarnett Hhoals. ha* re
cently returned from-an extensive trip
through the northern and western
states.
Having been engaged for more than n
third of, a,century in the cotton manu
facturing business. Mr. BloomfleJ.d is
quullfled by to note with
oecurary'all the changing condition* of
the manufacturing situation.
While on his trip north, Mr. Bloom
field gathered considerable Information
on the business outlook, and from what
ho gathered,he is satisfied that business
will now begin to pick up and thatpros
po«lty will begin to return to the peo
ple.
Mr. Bloomfield believes that cotton
will sell at a low figure, unless the crop
Is materially cut off try unpropltlous
seasons.but that the cotton manufactu
ring business, as well as other lines of
manufactories, will be prosperous.
The demands for yarns and cloths Is
on the increase, and when the peace
conference is over, the demand will be
greatly increased by virtue of the fact
that Cuba and Porto Rico will be under
the Vntted States flag'and in all prob
ability the Phtllpplne» : also.
Mr. Bloomfield believes that this
accession-of foreign tryvilory will great
ly stimulate trade, and Increase tb e de
mand for every Utnd )s <jrf manufactured
product this country now puts on (he
market.
The Btar Thread MHil. of which Mr,
Bloomfield is president*, is in fine shape
and haaian abunduuce of order* for its
product. •«' ; 'JPIi j
