NEORO SHOOTS A SOLDIER.
The Latter Probably Fatally Wounded
at Charleston.
Charleston. S. C., Sept. 8. Private
Theodore Godfrey of the Charleston
Heavy Battery, now stationed on Sul
livan's Island, was shot and probably
fatally wounded by a negro on King
street Tuesday evening. Godfrey was
standing with other soldiers on tbe
corner of Princess knd King streets. A
party of negroes stopped ori the corner
and began cursing and using obscene
language.
The street Is usually crowded with
ladies during the late hours of the af
ternoon. and Godfrey told the negroes
to stop using such language. He had
no sooner spoken than one of them,
known as "Cracker Henry." drew a
pistol and shot him. The negro es
caped. but the police hope to appre
hend him.
Godfrey was taken to the aity hospi
tal. The hall struck him in the ab
domen. cutting some of the intestines.
His Injuries are very dangerous and It
Is feared he will die. He is about 20
years of age, a Charlestonian by birth,
and a good soldier.

The Richmond Locomotive and Ma
chine Works’ order for building ten
pedo boats and torpedo boat destroyers
is balled as « great event for Rich
mond, and preparations are now being
made to build them at and over the
UockF. so that the boats may be float
ed right Into the river. There are over
1,000 hands already employed at the
works.
It is generally conceded that busi
ness is picking up. Our merchants
find it necessary to extend their terri
tory. nnd are doing so successfully.
Len. Wallerstcin, of M. Rosembaum &
Co., dry goods, ‘says his firm's August
business shows a phenomenal improve
ment. The credits extend Into Georgia
and other Southern states are satis
factory, while collections are rather
slow in the cotton belt, due lo low
prices for the staple. They are much
better in the Carolina*, where tbe to
bacco crops have paid’ especially well.
The Drewry-Hnghes t Co. considered
business in (he dry goods line very
good last fall, both in'volume and con
ditions, and. finds already that this
fall's trade Is 33 1-3 per cant better
than last.

Me Walked Out Into a Drenching
Rain.
Athens. Oa., Sept 8. A short
while since, I’rlvatc Charley Wood, of
Co. 0.. Second Georgia regiment,
came to the heme of his uncle, Mr.
Tom Wood, who lives near Athens. He
had just recovered from an attack of
measles and soon after reaching Ath
ens hp was taken with typhoid fever,
contracted at Tampa. A few nights
since he arose from his bed and, be
ing at times a somnambulist, wander
ed forth Into the night, although it
was pouring rain without. He Btray
ed off to a neighbor's house, who, not
knowing him. thought he was drunk.
Private Wood replied that he was not
drunk and that he wished to be shown
the way to Mr. Tom Wood's house.
Being shown the house he started back
—but fell down three times on his
way back. The third fall caused
him to awake. He hurried back home,
but was drenched through and
through, he being clad only in bis
night clotheß. He is now in a critical
condition, although he has chances of
recovering.
Prof. Drummond is in great demand
in Germany just now. "Pax Vobiscum"
has reached its fiftieth thousand, while
"The Greatest Thing in the World” has
sold to an extent of over 118.000 —a re
markable achievement for a book in
Germany.
