Liquor Licenses Come High.
All liquor licenses will expire Sep
tember 20th. This means that the liq
uor men will have to nay over to the
city a neot sum. if they would con
tinue in business. The carrying on of
a liquor business costs more than
most, at y other on account of the high
licenses and 'he many. Besides
the tax paid the city. Uncle Sam re
ouires a large sum and if a man has
net a fairly good trade, he w 11 soon go
to the wall, the licenses eating ail
profits up.
Fixing the Br'd re.
The bridge over the canal in West
End is being repaired. It vs been
needing It badly for some t.lipe and the
matter was mentioned in T'ne Herald
a few weeks ago. The bridge is getting
a new coat of paint.

Mr*. John K. Jackson reported that
she greatly enjoyed the reunion, and
fpo'ne of the many commendations of
Miss Eve's paper on The Soldiers'
Home, read before the convocation of
D. of C.
Mrs. Smythe reported that she at
tended the eonvocaiit»k with great
benefit and pleasure to herself, and
the rulings of the assem
bly.

recommended to the coming state con
vention that .Tie Daughters of the Con
federacy tty to gel possession of Iho
Soldiers' Home.
Mrs. Miller reportod that her visit
to the reunion hnving been cut short,
she only had the opportunl y of at
tending the first session of the coun
cil meeting, which was very enjoya
ble. Mrs. RounsaVllle, State Presi
dent, presided, and referred to the pre
sentation ot the presiden s, Mis. 1
Kate Cabell Curry, Mrs. Emma Col- 1
cton. Mrs. Pickett, Mrs. Goodlett, andj
Mrs. Hickman. She spoke o, r the fine:
address of welcome delivered hy Mrs. j
Plane very happily, and responded to j
b; Mis. Aiken of Cartersville Chapter;
also spoke of her appreciation of the,
several fine papers presented, of which
par excellence was that of Mrs. W. F.
Eve, our dear president, on the sub
ject of The Soldiers' Home. She said
that the paper was not only highly
creditable to Mrs. Eve. but extremely
valuable to the association on account
of the information as ,o the Home, and
moved that, Mrs. Eve be requested to
present the paper at the next meeting
of our chapter, for the instruction of
members upon the subject, of The
Soldiers’ Home, as that would give
them a better conception of the sub
ject and make it possible to intelli
gently Instruct delegates as to a.ct'.n
at conventions. This motion was un
animously Carried and Mrs. Eve agreed
to read the paper.
Mrs. Eve then opened her report
with a beautiful description of the
Women’s Club rooms In which the D.
of C. held their council. The descrip
tion made the members of Chapter A

She told us of the banner presented to
I the Georgia Division of the t'nlted
I Confederate Veterans by the Georgia
Division of the Daughters of the Con-
I federary; said it was the most beau
tiful banner she ever beheld. and
Chapter A desires right here to re
cord that Mrs. W. E. Eve. our pres
ident. suggested the design used for
this banner, the front of which Is of
elegant while silk, on which is palmed
a background of clouds; floating In
these clouds is a beautiful Confederate
Battle Flag. The reverse side is red
silk on which is painted the coat of
arms of Georgia. The banner Is fin
ished off with handsome gold cord,
fringe and tassels. It was presented
in the auditorium before fully ten
thousand people, hy Mrs. Hally Ronns
avllle. State President of D. of C., und i
wa* received in behalf of the veterans
of Georgia hy Mr. J. Rice Smith of Au
gusta. and handed to the Augusta de
tachment to be carried to the Georgia
division. A long double line of vete
rans was formed, between which
walked Mi»s Winnie Dav'R and Mrs.
Kate Cabell Curry, and the lovely new
banner of the Georgia division waved
over theit heads as they passed under
It. Alt. noble old veterans! Ah, hon
ored women! Ah. beautiful banner!
You are all treasured as the holy her
itage In the loyal hearts of the Daugh
ters of the Confederacy. Mrs. Eve
then said that she had i>ot told a fif
tieth part cf what she had seen, but
that the darkness admonished her that
she must save the balance for another
time, and so she announced that the
meeting was adjourned to meet on the
first Wednesday in September.
The Last German.
Mr. Montgomery Ridgley and some
others ate arranging to give a sub
scription German at the Arsenal armo
ry tomorrow night. This will be the
last of the Hilltop germans for the
summer season, it Is understood- The
young ladies who will attend will
shortly absent themselves from Au
gusta, transferring their thoughts
from such things as germans and like
affairs to the more weighty, such as
French verbs, and geometrical prob
lems.

A LIVE WIRE.

For quite a while today pedestrian*
on the south side of Broad were com
pelled to cross the street.
The cause of this was an electrlc-
Itsht wire that fell in front of Stal
lings' soda fountain, creating quite an
electrical display, as It touched the
other wire* In Its downward course.
An officer saw the wire fall and kept
passers-by off of It until linemen ar
-1 rived, who soon put the wire back In
Its place.
Police Drink Artesian Water.
The police of Augusta believe In hav
ing good drinking water. They don't
like lo accumulate real estate hy Im
bibing of the Savannah river bretv In
Its present state of muddlncss. Not a
hit do they. They drink artesian wa

Bibb’s Tax Rate.
j Macon, Ga., Sept. 7.—The county
i commissioners of Bibb met and fixed
the county tax rate for this year at
$7.79 on the SI,OOO, or an Increase of
2 Ocents on the SI,OOO over the rate of
last year. The increase is less than it
was thought it would be.
The state rute as tixed for this year
by the state authorities is $0.21 on the
SI,OOO, or an Increase over last year of
$1 on the SI,OOO. The combined state and
county rate‘that taxpayers in Bibb will
have to pay Is' sl4 on the SI,OOO. or a
total Inctdase of $1.20 per SI,OOO. The
rate per SIOO Is sl.4 n . or an increase
of 12 cents on the SIOO.
