Prof. S. M. Martin, tale of Johnston,
having been elected to an important
position In the preparatory department
of Clemson rollege, departed thither a
few days back. Clemaon college could
not have chosen a young man of more
absolute reliability and efficiency. Prof.
Martin Is a sc.on of a South Carolina
family noted, since the earliest days
of the first revolution, for patriotism
and ability In peace, and valor and
self-sacrifice in war; and nobly has he
held the high record bequeathed him
by his fathers. No young man has
ever left Edgefield or it» borders whose
departure was more universally or
sincerely regretted than that of Sam
uel Mailer Martin. And It would be
difficult for any man to leave a better
name or record Behind him. When
the mountain winds of Clemson grow
wearisome, and even the scent of the
mountain ttotvers become monotonous
by long continnanre. Maner Martin
can come back to Edgefield, where his
dear presence will never become either
w'earisome or monotonous. We con
gratulate Clemson college very heart
ily upon securing Prof. Martin,—
Edgefield Chronicle.
