BEAUTIFU! ANDORAND.
As we boarded a steamer and began
our trip to Flullen, Intending thus to
pass through the enllre length, the de
scriptions of Schiller came to me es a
reminder of where I was. and the
many legends of William Tell, whose
deeds were enacted on the shore# en
hanced the scenery by making me fee!
as If on Tamillar ground. The lake is
completely walled in by stupendous
mountain* that rise abruptly from the
laEhing waters at their feet: on the!
shore is a series of cool, peaceful little
villages connected by a finely con
structed carriage road along the moun
tain sides. The pietti at and most in
teresting of these villages is Brunn: a,
for near here on a romantic arm of the
lake in the Rirtti, a step meadow sur
rounded with trees, where, it will he
remembered Walter Furst called a

Vet amid such surrounding* whore
there are Inaccessible eyries, fantas
tic battlements of rock, formed by pre
hl*torlc convulsions of nature, glacial
beds and torrents, even amid such gi
gantic grandeur, and natural wildness,
be people cultivate the tender geran
ium, as if there -veie not wasted beau
ty at tbelr doors. The very contrast
makes it impressive. Here stone Is
In superabundance. Small huts dot
ting the deep declivities are made, In
cluding even the roof, of stone, and"
the fences that encircle them consist
of marble slabs, sluck perpendicularly
In the ground. Grouped around these
small houses may be seen the sturdy
mountaineer and hi 3 family gazing at
tourists, in open-mouth amazement
that anyone should come all the way
from America to see things to which
they themselvep never pay any atten
tion.
THE GREAT TUNNEL.
Passing on throught a series of tun
nels and <yyer numerous bridges, we
see before us the dark yawning mouth
of the great St. Oothard Tunnel/ This,
the longest tunnel in the world, is an
example of what man’s ingenuity and
