Don't* For the Mother.
She should not forget that If she
treats tier boy us a gentleman she will
do much toward making him oh*.
She should not treat her boy lo per
petual frowns, scoldings and fuult find

vinegar." Love wins her boy to u noble
manhood.
She should never be so busy o« hard
pressed for time that she cannot listen
to him. If he lives to be a man. he wilt
all too soon leave her. She should make
th? most of him while sh? hu* him.
She should not deny her boy any op

sports, and she should not forget to
train him with a proper regard for his
personal appearance.
Bhe should never allow him to form
such habits as coming lo table In his
shirt sleeves, neglecting his nails or
teeth or carrying soiled handkerchiefs.
Bhe should never nag him or forget
that he Is a creature of reason, not an
animal which requires to be driven.
She should not try to break her boy s
will, but be thankful that he Is manly
enough to have a mind of his own and
devote herself to training it to the no
blest uses.
She should not fail to Instill in him a
distaste for all that is vulgar.

WASHABLE. RUGS

thought of and In the evenings when
1 the little one* crave for something to
i do before bedtime come*.
Why not set them to rugmaking?
Kittle « year-olds in elementary schools
love this occupation, which Is worthy
of an InimJurttoh into the home circle,
with ii* pleasant voluntary tolls.
The male) t«i* heeded are knitting cot
ton and two knitting needle*. Tne cot
ton la to be cut into uniform length* of
about three Inches To rut It an ex
cellent plan is to wind the cotton upon
a round ruler, then with a sharp pair of
scissors to cut the thread along tha
whole length of the ruler.
To begin the knitting, an uneven
number of stitches Is cast on and four
or five rows knitted plainly, then on the
second stitch of the row to be fringed
one of the lengths us cut cottun la knit
ted In. The length is simply doubled,
and being placed end to end. the loop
so formed in the center Is taken along
with the stitch In knitting.
Alt the even stitches take a piece of
cotton fringe on this row. The next
row Is knitted plainly; then comes an
other fringed row. Thu* the row* con
tinue. one fringed, one plain. untH tha
strip is long enough. If this strip is
knitted In white cotton the next strip
may be in red cotton, the colors alter
nating until the requisite number of
strips are knitted, when they are sewed
together to make a very handsome
striped cotton mat.
This method of knitting the'fringe on
every alternate row make* a heavily
fringed, pretty and durable rug, very
warm and comfortable for the feet on
stepping out of the bath. As It Is ab
sorbent it becomes of great service, es
pecially In a house where there ara
many i hlldren to bathe. If the rug is de
sired lighter than this, so muking it
easier to wash when soiled, the rows of
cotton fringe may he placed on every
fourth row instead of upon every sec
ond one.
To vary the patterns in different ruga
the white strips may be knitted wide
and the red ones narrow and vice
versa. Again, the alternate rows of
eotton lengths may be knitted red and
while, this plan making an excellent
mat. or perhaps a white rug with a red
border may be liked. •
Little fingers grow expert a I this
work, and little heade get very interest
ed In it. The knitting not only gives
finger practice and profitable employ
ment of time, but cultivates the facul
ties of patience and attention no less
than it teaches the duty of using up all
scraps of time. _
