rtJoag the coast the oyster beds sre
kept In good outer and are highly
prized.
If a salt river containing oyster beds
runs between two pieces of land the
owners of the land are considered own
ers of the beds, and often severe feuds
exist about the ownership.
Robber ester boats often run In
and steal oysters. These are often shot
at or chased away and many of the
owners of beds watch all night to
guard agallnst the -marauders.
When a bed seems likely to be ex
hausted all oyster fishing Is stopped
and young oysters are transplanted to
aid It.
The owners of the beds either work
them or sell the right to companies or
private individuals. This trade Is
either made by the bushel or by the
length of time, the quantity
being In favor.
Many interesting hours can he spent

TOOK PICTURES
Of Her Roval Sister When Her Only
Raiment Wa# Mud
(letter In 8L I pouts Globe- Democrat > !
There ha* been a most sensational .
and serio-comic quarrel between the :
Crown Princess of Roiimanla and her
sister, the Grand Duchess of Hesse, j
which Is causing a ripple of laughter
frem one end of Europe to the other. ;
The Grand Ditches* of Hesse has been j
Haying at Schwa I bach for the sake of j
the famous mud baths of the place.
On one reraslon her stater, the Crown
Princess of Roumani*. accompanied
her. sat In the room with her while
she was In the bath, and then, a* the
Grand Duchess emerged, therefrom,
covered from her neck to her feet with
a thick ttotting of mod, took a snap
shot of her with s kctlak. which she
Invariably carries about with her.
She seem* to have done this without
•he knowledge of the Grand Duchess,
and ’he first thing that the latter knew
about it was when she was presented
with a picture representing her as j
species of somber, or. rather, piebald
Venus, emerging not from the blue a a,
but front thi' repulsive Swalbach mud.
There is nothing absolutely Improp
er about the portrait, since the mud
may I e srld to have formed a species of
close fitting garment. Still, at ihe
tame time, it is not a very pleasant
thing for an attractive woman, such as
the Grand Duohoes may claim to be, io
be 'htis portrayed.
To make matters worse, the Crown
Princess was so inordinately amused
with the success of the picture that be
fore her sister knew anything about it
she struck off a number of proofs and
distributed them broadcast among the
numerous friends and relatives of the
two sisters. It is scarcely necessary to
add that they are no longer on speak
ing terms, the Grand Duchess being the
last person in the world to understand
end appreciate a_ joke of this kind. In
fact, the origin of all her troubles with
j her husband has Wen due to the lat
ter's persistence In* making her the butt
of those practical Jtikes to which he is
addicted. Many of these jokes have
troen/tn thenatureqf coarse horse play,
to which any woman pos
serseti of any dignity would object, and
sympathy has been, universally on the
side of the Grand'Duchess in her mat
rimonial differences with her heart.

DUTIES OF COUNCIL.
The old eo<4e, wonderful to relate,
had no chanter and not even a sect ten

The new code assemble* everything

the board of health: and the list cf offi

sought. In addition to the mayor and
chairman of the hospital cnmnlllt,
as heretofore, any member of the fac
ulty of the Medical college, or any city
physician, or la an emergency any po

so that relief cap be afTcrded Insianter.
The humane will be glad to learn that
the brute creation also is to be better
protected. Abuse of a haok or dray
horse forfeits the driver's license, and
any cruelty not punishable directly in
the state courts can be punished by the
recorder. But, said Mr. Duteher, this
will doubtless suffice as to the changes
tn the ordinances, though there are
several others worthy of note, such as
the prohibition of indecent shows.and
tne posting of filthy show bills in the
streets.
THE STATE LAWS.
“How about the changes In the state
laws.” queried the reporter.
You will notice, said Mr. Duteher,
that the city attorney Is now publishing
the required notices for quite a number
of local acts relative to Augusta,
which are intended to clear up dcubts
and clear up omissions in legislation.

WANTED ‘ThORITY.
Sought Written Court Permission to
do Some Fighting.
Charley Cummlng'ls a good old negro.
He Is honest, if he Is simple In hia
ways: and he Is brave, for he went to
the war with his master, and carried
for him. He Is a good old colored man.
Charley was doing some scouring foe
a colored patron the other day. Acci
dentally he broke a gas shade. The pa
tron k?pt 50 cent from him for the cost
of the shade.
Charley showed up at the court house
yesterday morning. “I am looking for
a magistrate to make that man pay
me. I would Just as soon see the court
house judge. I don't Imow anything
about courts, because I have never been
in them. I «m a peaceful negro, but r.a
one shall do me Injustice. I want a
written order from the court, giving me
permission to thrash that man. I don't
want to cut or shoot. I want to take
one of those walking sticks I have at
home and thrash him good. I can do
It easily enough, but I don’t want to
get into court trouble. That is the iea
sen 1 want the order from the court
giving ine the right to whip him.
He didn’t use these exact words, but
that is what he said. He was hot in
anger as he walked off to find Judge
Eve to secure the necessary permission
to thrash-the man-who he thought had
not done him right.
