A Complaint and Answer From Mis
souri.
Washington. Kept 17. The pontnf
flee department had occasion recently
to call the attention of a postmaster
In a small Missouri town to com
plaints to the department regarding
the conduct of his office. In response
to the department's letter th# postmas
ter sent th# following reply: “The
Ifostmaster and complainant live on
adjoining lots. The complainant Is a
thin, cadaverous, sour-vlsaged, lan
tern-jawed individual, completely ster
ilised, and much devoted to cats, of
which lie has a varied and interesting
assortment. The post master has a
boy—not a bad boy, us boys but
Just a boy. Other neighbors have
other boys. One day, Inspired by th«
imps which are charged In mystic lore
with being responsible • for all the
nvL'kcdness of the world, these other
boys Inveigled the complaliant’s cats
Into n race with a neighboring dog.
from which pastime the cats returned
In a somewhat ruffled and dilapidated
form: whereupon complainant became
exceeding wroth, and at the first, op
portunity Interviewed the postmaster’s
hoy In the beck alley relative to the
said cat. race, and, notwithstanding the
bov’s earnest, denial of any participa
tion In the sport, backed by an offer to
prove an alibi by showing his presence
at the swimming hole at the time of
the race, the complainant continued lo
charge him with wrongdoing and to
revile him in heated und forceful lan
guage, until the boy, stung by charges
of which he was not guilty, gathered
sundry old tin cans, discarded boots
and dried vegetables in the back alley,
and when the shades of night were
falling fast, elevated them in the air
at an angle which caused them to Tall
Into complainant’s back yard; since
which time the administration of ihts
posiofflce has utterly failed to find fa
vor In Ihe sight of the said complain
ant. i .

Roy Jackson, the young son of Mr.
