DEATHS AT MANILA.
Most of Them Occurred in Action or j
Resulted From Wounds
Washington. Oct. 3. The follow
ing was received at the war depait- j
ment: '
Manila. Oct. 3. The dfaths among
the troops in the Philippines in July.
August and September, were, four of
ficers, righty-three•enlisted men; Au
gust. two officer?, fifty enlisted men,
of whom one officer and sixteen enlis
ted men were killed In action, and
seven died of wounds. Deaths for
September, twenty-five enlisted men.
Total deaths, seventeen killed in ac
tion, seven died of wounds, fourteen
of tyhpbold fever. The cause of the
remaining deaths were accidents and
miscellaneous diseases.

State Department received the follow
ing from Minister Conger, at Pekin;
“There is no serious danger, hut con
siderable anxiety for the future. The
foreign fleet is assembling at Tein-
Tsin. Some ministers are ordering the
marines to Pekin for the legation
guard.”

the Commercial-Tribune from Wash
ingtem, I nil., says: At 1:30 this morn
ing the masked miners are believed
to have gone to the mines two niLes
soutneast of the city where more of the
negroes are living with the intention
of drfvtag them out. it is said they arc
bent on doing up C. C. Rowland-, the
white boss.
Stats huve been heard in that di
•rection for tbe Isbl half hour, and there
may lie’s battle. The negroes are arm
ed at the mines and are well protect
ed. It is impossible at this hour to
get any direct news from the mine.

a Boston hotel with a male companion -
over a year ago, drowned himself in a
pond, at Kllxabcth, four mile* from
Parle. He firm loosened the tap on one
wheel of his buggy, then tied himself,

cf water in the pond. He was not quite
dead when discovered, but never re

NEW ILLUMINATION
To Be Generated From the Friction of
the Axles.
Chicago, Oct. 3. —The Santa Fe road
has made arrangements to light all the
cars pf its limited train running be-,
tween Chicago and Los Angeles, a dis
tance of 2,265 miles, with electricity
evolved from tbe friction of the car
axles. All berths will he provided
with berth lights and this will be the
first train in the world carrying such
a large supply of light service exclu
sively from tbe csr axles.

Lunatics Placed In the .Same Cell and
Murder Results.
St. Ixiuls. Oct. 3. A muruer was
committed this morning in the St,
Louis Asylum for the lusane, William
Kern is kicking Ben Bevan to death.
Both were Inmates and confined In the
violent ward. Kernls was received In
February, 1897, with the warning that
he was dangerous and should lie ejosely
watched. He was found cxi the streets
and only his name on a slip of paper
In his pocket gave his identity. The
police gave the warning of his dsnger
ousness. Bevan came in 1887 as an
uncontrollable. Both men occupied the
same cell, which contained two bunks.
At 5 o’clock this morning Kernls arose,
and, jerking Bevan out of bed. threw
him down and kicked him viciously
He was raving and the guards In thci
corridor knew that it meant death to
enter. Bevan did not seem seriously
injured, and after Kernls had subsid
ed the grards went Into the cell. Bevan
was dead.

Collision at sea.
Ixindon, Oct. 3.—The British steam
er Hill Craig. Captain Gibson, from
Fcrnandiua. Sept. 3rd, via Norfolk,
Scut. 11, for Hamburg, collided with
the Dutch steamer Deruyter, bound
from Crimstadt for Dordrecht. The
collision occurred near Helvoet. The,
Hill Craig proceeded and the extent of
the damage Is yet unknown, but tUp
De f uyter is badly damaged.

, Seattle, Oct. 3. The steam Bchoon
er Discovery arrived at midnight from
Alaska, with one hundred passengers,
and about fifty thousand dollars In
Kold dust. The treasure was owned
by a few men. A. Hellworth Is credit
ed with $15,000; George McCord, $lO.-
000; Dan McDonald, a brother of Alex
McDbnald, is said to have brought out
