Most of Them Occurred in Action or j Resulted From Wounds Washington. Oct. 3. The follow ing was received at the war depait- j ment: ' Manila. Oct. 3. The dfaths among the troops in the Philippines in July. August and September, were, four of ficers, righty-three•enlisted men; Au gust. two officer?, fifty enlisted men, of whom one officer and sixteen enlis ted men were killed In action, and seven died of wounds. Deaths for September, twenty-five enlisted men. Total deaths, seventeen killed in ac tion, seven died of wounds, fourteen of tyhpbold fever. The cause of the remaining deaths were accidents and miscellaneous diseases. (Signed) Otis. Fears For th: Future. Washington. D. C.. Oct. 3. The State Department received the follow ing from Minister Conger, at Pekin; “There is no serious danger, hut con siderable anxiety for the future. The foreign fleet is assembling at Tein- Tsin. C. Rowland-, the white boss. Stats huve been heard in that di •rection for tbe Isbl half hour, and there may lie’s battle. The negroes are arm ed at the mines and are well protect ed. It is impossible at this hour to get any direct news from the mine. He was not quite dead when discovered, but never re gained eonseioimnesa. NEW ILLUMINATION To Be Generated From the Friction of the Axles. Chicago, Oct. 3. —The Santa Fe road has made arrangements to light all the cars pf its limited train running be-, tween Chicago and Los Angeles, a dis tance of 2,265 miles, with electricity evolved from tbe friction of the car axles. All berths will he provided with berth lights and this will be the first train in the world carrying such a large supply of light service exclu sively from tbe csr axles. Appointment*. VIOLENT Lunatics Placed In the .Same Cell and Murder Results. St. Ixiuls. Oct. 3. A muruer was committed this morning in the St, Louis Asylum for the lusane, William Kern is kicking Ben Bevan to death. Both were Inmates and confined In the violent ward. Kernls was received In February, 1897, with the warning that he was dangerous and should lie ejosely watched. He was found cxi the streets and only his name on a slip of paper In his pocket gave his identity. The police gave the warning of his dsnger ousness. Bevan came in 1887 as an uncontrollable.
