Pickpocket* Clef In Their Work at the
Hayard Funeral.
Wilmington. Del.. Oct 4 The
Hayard obsequies were profitable to a
gang of clerer pickpockets. The pllf-r
--ers were men and women who took
advantage of the report* concerning
the public Interest in the occasion by
l omlng here from Philadelphia to reap
a harvest They hegan their operations
gt the Clayton House, where a large
number of people were assembled
early In the morning to be In readi
ness for the funeral. After the gene
ral mix-up of humanity In the hotel
corridor several men missed their
pocketbooks, wallets and other valua
bles.
At Old Swedes Church, where servi
ces over the dead ambassador were
read, the pickpockets did a thriving
business in the great throng that surg
ed to and fro. . United States Marshal
John Cannon Short and Chief Justice
or the Supreme Court Charles B. Lore
had their wallets stolen from their hip
pockets. Ex-President Grover Cleve
land. who was one of the honorary
pall hearers, stood next to Judge Lore
when the thieves tugged at the latter’s
roattails. Judge Ta>re says hi* wallet
was In his pocket during the first part
of the service, but ho missed It when
the line hegan to move toward the
burial ground. Mr. Cleveland, when
interviewed, declined to state whether
he had suffered any loss. Complaint*
have been coming to the pollco In
bunches and Chief Dolan figures that
pickpockets took away at least SBOO
with them.
