On Uie subject of the one of parent*
and (u Influence on their progeny, the
result of a careful Investigation of
twenty-four thousand eases. T)r. ,Ta
roele has presented to the director of
the Hungarian bureau of statistics tiie
following conclusions: The offspring
of parents between the ages of twen
ty and twenty-live are likely to be
weak and delicate, but between tweo
ty-flve and forty-five will probably be
strong and thrive. The mother bears
most robust children between her
twenty-filth and thirty-fifth year.
When themother Is ten years youngoi
than the father, the proportion of
healthy children Is greatest, the
chances being ten per cent more favor
able than when the parents are of
about the same age.

BEUINNIHO SMALL
“I can't afford to advertise on a
large Beale,” said an Augusta mer
chant lately, "and with my varied
stork I wouldn't know where to begin
on a small scale.” It la a common fal
lacy that the advertising must cover
the wholeatock. In point of fact. It
never does, even with the most lavish
Advertisers; and If it did. the result
would be a jumble of prolixity. The
true policy la to select one article at a
time— something moderately priced
and meeting the wants of the day—and
push that at the people.
A Philadelphia concern put on the
market a rug bearing the face of Ad
miral Dewey In the centre and on eith
er side an American battleship. The
price was only 11.25. but people re
fused to buy; perhaps, as one man ex
claimed: "Because Dewey Is too good
a man to be stepped on." This inci
dent Illustrates the truth of several
things; one. that even what was the
finest advertising originally soon gets
to be ait old story, and that the ad.
man must ever rack his brains for
something new.
A Philadelphia chureh—ihe Memor
ial Baptist has just secured the ser
vices of Kev. J. M. Poteut of New
Haven. It was his wife who secured
national uotoriety by telling a lot of
women of New Haven that she would
as soon have a sou of hers go to Hades
as to Yale.
By a majority of 1300 the miners of
Fife auil Kinross, Scotland, have
agreed to accept the five per cent ad
vance offered by the coal owners and
to continue at work. % •
Dewey’s July record is seven post
offices in as many states. Hobson had
one named after him in July. Alger
none.
Laura Jean Ltbbey. who was recent
ly marlred, is said "to Ueve been 35
years old eight years ago."

Many yepr* ago in that locality, there
was a wayside Inn named “The Cock

Knglish tavern, and abtrh bore upon
its swinging sign a rock and bottle,
meaning thereby that draught and bot
: tied ale eould be had within the
"cock." In old vernacular, meaning the
tap He. therefore, who got the last
and muddy portion of the tap. wan
said to have received the "cocktail."
Upon one occasion when Col. Carter
wa* subjected to the Indignity of hav
ing this muddy beverage put hefore
him, he threw It angrily upon the
floor and exclaimed: "Hereafter I will
drink cocktails of my own brewing."
and then and there, insplrrjd evidently
by the eplrit of Ganymede, he dashed
together bitters, sugar, the oil of
lemon peel and some old Holland gin.
and thus then and there was tbp ori
ginal cocktail concocted.
A few weeks ago The Herald record
ed the fact that a young lady formerly
well knowrn In Augusta had married
a man In New York who has the repu
tation of not having finished sowing
his old wild oats. He has run through
one fortune and while professing re
formation will occasionally break out.
Yesterday we were discussing the phe
nomenal inereuse of eases of wife
murder, followed by attempted suicide,
occurring all over the country., when
an Augusta lawyer said: “As a rule,
some worthless scoundrel marries a
good woman and proceeds systemati

abuses, neglects and torments her
with all tbb devilish ingenuity of a
fiend Incarnate. and after he Ki 3
reached the end of his own rope and
Is too thoroughly wrecked both men
tally and physically to continue his
career of outrage, lie finishes his Job

Is a beautiful moral in such case for
any woman who meditates the trans

she is doing something noble, tint as
a matter of fact “lie wauls a li

prides Itself on Ita line old Virginia
cooking. The V. M. I. grounds are a
.favorite resort every afternoon for the
visitor to see dress parade and hear
the hand play. Among the Georgians
now cadets at the Institute are Messrs.

Washington and Lee University's
president la Hon. William L. Wilson,
a man noted for his superior Intellec
tual attainments. Mrs. Wilson, who Is
universally beloved by those who know
her, is a daughter of Dr. Huntington,
who was pastor of the First Baptist
church at Augusta during the war.
The Wilsons occupy the mansion for
so many years the home of Gen. Roliert
E. Lee and his family. Gen. Robert Lee
being succeeded, in his presidency of
Washington and La* University by his
son. Gen. Custls Lee. The ancestral
portraits belonging to the Lees are still
to be seen hanging In Ihe hallway and
dining-room of this house. Two of
them, by Knoller. are of great value
and. Indeed, all of them are of untold
Interest to the historic-loving Ameri
can. President Wilson amused me
very much by pointing to the picture of
one of the Custls children, a very young
boy, adding that he was grandfather
to a very old man whose portrait was
hanging nearby. I would advise all
Augostans whoavlalt the Virginia re
sorts to add Lexington to (heir itiner
ary. They will l>e amply repaid.
M. T M.
One direc t outcome of the war is the
interest displayed in politics and the
acceptance of nominations for public,
life, by the rich. Idle young men of
the country, young men who have for
merly dawdled through life and who
have been content with dressing, by
day and dancing by night.
