Washington Courthouse, 0., Oct. 6.
Eleven years ago, Lewis Ball was foul
ly murdered here, his head being cut
off with a razor, and hla head and body
laid across the railroad track in such
a manner as to appear that he had been
killed by train. Abraham Huffman was
arrested for the crime, but was released
for lack of convicting evidence.
Others were suspected, but It looks
now as If the death-bed confession of
Mis. Jeffreys,of Hillsboro, 0., lust made
In the presence of four persons, whom
she called to her death-chamber, will
reveal the identity of the murderer.
Mrs. Jeffreys Implicated herself, an
other woman and four men, giving their
names.
She said that she held Ball's head
while a man cut It off with a razor.
Mile said also that the blood was al
lowed to How In ii tub, which was af
terwards concealed under n house, and
Unit the Other woman held Ball on her
lap while Ills head was being cut off
The men carried the body and head to
ll,e railroad track to cover up the crime
The persons implicated live in and
about tbe city. Detectives have gone to
Highland county for additional evi
dence, and a big sensation is looked
for. .

Mr. J. L. Cartledge knew they did
not want to hear a popgun after a can
non. so didn't want to hear him; but
he wanted to urge a pure ballot. Did
not need a primary, but to make the
white men stop buying votes. Urged
everybody to desert the candidate who
commenced to buy votes, and said If
Mr. Mattlson tried to buy any he Inten
ded to desert him. He wanted to see
the ward represented hy a working
man and appealed to the voters to
have a fair election. Mr. Alley was
for Mattlson. Had known Elliott
for a long time and knew him to be
all right, but he wanted a working
man who had worked hi* way up to
represent the ward. Wanted a pure
election. Referred to Atlanta’a election
that, was conducted so well and then
to our mayor’s election; showed thfi
difference. 1
