In MW a ‘ Hay Uny" »•« celebrated
lei Albany. Premiums bad been offer
ed for tba best eghlbit of bay, and
farmers from all th* surrounding
country competed. The two principal
I street* In the city were crowded with
hay wagons, at regular Intervals
booth* of hay had been erected, from
which some of the prettiest girls In the
(own smiled upon the farmers, anil
the judge*. Along the streets rolled
carriages and boggle*, the wheel*
wrapped with hay. and the hone*
decked with the name. For that day at
leaat everybody In and around Albany
had hayaeed In hla hair, and was proud
to show It.
Hay Is Now King.
Ever since my boyhood I have visit
ed Albany every now and then, but
never before have I seen such small
cotton crops, and many of the farmers
have even neglected what they have
and let the land produce hay.
The rains of the summer have done
wonders for the grass, and never be
fore In the history of southwest Geor
gia has such a crop of hay been gath
ered as that which Is now being
housed and stacked. Thousands of
tons are being saved, and thousands
of dollars are thus being kept st home.
The people of Albany have caught
the spirit of the times, and although
cotton Is low. the farmers have made
good crops of corn and hay.
Many improvements have recently
been made In Albany, among them h
new brick storehouse and the com
modious new auditorium of the South
west Georgia Chautauqua.
Among the new settlers who have
come to Albany are a number of sub
stantial Greeks, one of them having
rented a beautiful home near the city.
Another Greek bought a farm upon
which a Yankee had failed to make a
living. He has made a great success
of the place, making twenty bushels
of corn to the acre, and that without
fertilizers.
A new railroad Is being surveyed
from Albany to Valdosta. Albany is
up-to-date in eevrythlng, as is shown
by the names given by a young negro
native to three pointer puppies. The
largest is Bob Evans. Ihe next is
Schley and the third is Dewey.
Albany can give pointers to convH
workers on how to catch escapes.
There Is » brickyard near the city,
around which are numerous pyramids
of pine wood. One the top of each pile
it -t quart bottle filled with kerosene.
If a convict escapes at night tho

A Tedious Journey
leaving Albany at 9 o’clock Friday
morning we rolled over the river,
bound for Thomasvllle. The train was
due (here at 1:M o'clock, but there
was so much freight to deliver that
we did not reach tThomasvlllc until 3.
The passenger tfWln for Balnbridgn

to get permission to ride on a through

we would have made splendid time IT
it had not been forced to wait for two
trains. As It was we did nos reach
Baimbridge until after 5 o'clock, tak
ing eight hours to make the trip of
ninety-four miles. I had formed rather
a poor opinion of the Plant system,
but I traveled on the regular passen
ger, one of the finest and certainly the
fastest in the state. It was a luxury to
ride upon it.
One noticeable feature of the Plant
system is that all the depots and ev
ery bouse belonging to the road are

compliment to her the great railroad
megnat* had Llfllie buildings on the
system painted yellow.

Comparatively little Is known of
