It developed today that the adtofnis
‘tration had given instructions to the
American Comml*eioners of such a
character as to make officials here
hopeful that something definite would
be done before the commission ad
journed.
According to information obtained,
it appears that several months ago
navy department appointed a board of
officers consisting Of IX. Satterlee, Lt.
Seymour, and Naval Constructor Da?-
hiell. to examine the entire subject of
the effect of the Rush-Bagot treaty,
and to report to the department whe
ther it was desirable to secure Its ab
rogation or modification. The board
tv as asked to report how many war
vessels each countrj' should maintain
on the great lakes, and whether it was
advisable to build warships on (he
lakes, and to make such suggestions
as lt deemed proper. The report o'
the board was duly made and Secre
tary Long cansmitted it to the state
department, .’dth the statement that
it embodied the views of the navy de
partment.
The report has been sent to Senator
Fairbanks, chairman of the American
Commission, and it will be the basis

direction to submit suggestions, the
board recommended that an agreement
be made with Great Britain to permit
the United States to equip every na
val militia organization on the lakes
with a training ship. These vessels.
It said, would be obsolete as fighters,
but very useful in developing men-of
warsmen. Th” board did not favor
the erection of a government shipyard
on the lakes. It recommended,
however, that naval stations be estab
lished there, where warships can be
wintered and overhauled.

Stole the Mascot.

Chicago. 111.. Oct. B.—The Chicago
polic-? are looking for a cub mountain
lion which is said to have been stolen
at Montauk by several soldiers and
sold In Chicago. The cub was the mas
cot of the famous Roosevelt Rough
Riders and was highly prized. It was
stolen by a party cf soldiers en route
West in charge cf two carloads as
horses belonging to government offi
cers. Alexander'o. Bronce telegraphed
from New York that he had traced the
animal to this city. The stock yards
police learned Giat the lion had been
sold by soldiers to pome one at the
Union stock yards, but have failed to
learn the name of the purchaser.

Horse Stepped on HP: Foot.
This afternoon a cony try negro had
his foot severely mashed by a horse.
The man, Ernest Kennedy, drove his
team Into the city and something got
(he matter with the harness. While
attempting to repair Hie damage one
of the animals stepped on his foot.
Medical assistance was summoned and
the man sent home.

discussion among the citizenif, and for

around the store. The arm yoffleers
guyed Maj. Harrison about being the
Fist officer of the corps so be under

Today an unknown man was thrown
by his horse out on Jackson street,
near the Cooperative Coal company’s.
The horse was caught by a passer be
fore It could get away. The man waa
bruised, but not seriously hurl.

There Will Re No Competitive Drill

Pittsburg. Pa.. Oct. b. - Gorgeous
ly plumed Sir Knighls, the first of the
great bod; of Knights Templar, which
will virtually own Pittsburg for the
next tlx 01 eight claya. arrived at
Pittsiuiig today.i This vanguard was
the Sir Knights of California. The
most distinguished gueal of the Cali
fornians wu« the Very Eminent Sir
Reuben H. Lloyd. who will be promo
ted at the Orand Encampment to the
highest post within the gift of the as
sembled knights, Orand Mu ter of the
Oiund Encampment. Orand Master
Thomas will attlve th's evening.
Capt. Wm. 11. Hechert. who has charge
of the commandery drills, announces
that there will lie no competitive ex
hibition. The late war with Spain,
has railed many knights Into the vol
unteer service. This fart conics as a
great disappointment, as the competi
tive drills have nlwayis been the fea
ture of every conclave.
Two Conventions Called.
Savannah. Oct. 8. Two calls have
been sent out by the .republicans for
conventions to meet In Savannah on
the tenth of October to consider th -
advisability of nominating a candidate
for congress in opposition to Colonel
Lester.
One of the calls Ir signed by L. M.-
Pleasant and the other by a rew mem
bers of the committee. It is claimed
by some that L. A. Delcgal is chair
man of the party ami he has signed
neither call. They are both for the
same time and place.
Challenge Accepted.
London. Oct. 8. The British chess
chib of London has accepted the chal
lenge of the Brooklyn chess club to a
cable match for the Newnes trophy, to
be played next yew.
