Something made of nothing tasting
very sweet,
A most delicious compound with In
gredients complete;
But If the heart and mind should hap
pen to he sour.
It has no significance and loses half
its power.
Something made of nothing, but never
twice the same.
Though ’its found tn every climate
where love has had a name;
It Is clearly meant for giving, though
'(ls often bought and sold.
And, like coffee and potatoes, not so
good when cold.
It oft appeases discord when word*
have failed to please.
Whether bestowed caressingly or giv
en jast to tease;
For a laugh will often save one from
doing something worse,
And the lips that taste its sweetness
are seldom hoard to curse.
’Tts the strangest oddest mixture, this
something made of naught.
Which Is never seen or handled, al
though ’tls often caught;
And which will not spoil In keeping,
whatever be the clime,
For the something made of nothing
will stand the test of time.
Now lie laid his heart at her feet.
"Darling, be— ’’

gesture.
The flood of his passionate words
was stayed.

The Second regiment boys tell lots
of Interesting atorlss sbout camp lift'
and particularly about cooking, sma
tetir cooking. It sometimes happened
that the cook was a fellow who had
never so much »* toasted a piece of
bread in the whole course of his life,
and the messes they prepared were
fearful and wonderful. ! For a time the
supplies were so short, that there was
no material for fantastic experiment*,
but when things becagie a tittle more
plentiful the cooks attempted numer
ous fancy dishes. They were generally
iu the lltie of slews qjid hash. One
young soldier who lives on Greene
street, told me confidentially that he
•'Just put in everything he had and
sort of stirred it up.” But the boys
were generally so hungry that they ate
whatever was served, apneared to rel
ish It and asked no questions. It is
astonishing what a man cannot, only
stand but thrive on utuler such circum
stances. A favorite dish was fried
hard tack. The army crackers would
bp broken up ami friend in the grease

came out black and dripping, and if,
