while up where they sat the aun shone
brightly in dear sky of tendered blue.
Presently the great chasm filled with
seething mlat. which, mounting higher j
and higher, overlapped the cliff* and
obscured the sun,and the growing dark
m-s* admonished the judge and hi# fair
companion to seek shelter from the ap
proaching storm uner the frt-ndly pro
tection of tiunaet Rock. They had
scarcely reached It Iwfore the rain
cam* down In driving sheet*, the moun
tain riba became caging torrent* and
th* electrical display waa Inceaaant and |
aubllme. while p«al after peal of thun- j
der rent the air and shook the earth,
making old Lookout tremble on hla
base. The rloud then lifted, and Ihc
rain ceased as suddenly aa It began.
The sun sent a shaft of light through
a rift,and the severing cloud dissolved
Instantaneously Into floating flakes
that, as they chased each other across
the valley, printing their changing
forma In patches of light and shadow
on the vivid green,produced effects sim
ilar to the finest kaleidoscopic creations.
A glorious rainbow set Itself In the high
arched and vaulted heavena and span
ned the upper valley in triumphant and
magical splendor, the last rays of the
netting sun tinged the rim of the Blue
Itidge with molten gold, and the ashes
of roses sifted down to earth.
Turning from the gorgeous spectacle,
the Judge's eyes rested tenderly upon
her wealth of auburn tresses, now
showing their Titian tints in the young
twilight, and he bent over and w-hls
pered something that brought the roses
to her cheek, and her great brown eyes
drooped low beneath their silken fringe.
The prety ferns may have curled their
feathery fronds to catch the answer, so
softly It came, I can’t say.
But one thing certain, the overcurious
dames at the Inn who displayed such
anxiety to And out whom her choice
would be had to wait « couple of
months, when it was announced in a
little town In the bermuda belt of
Georgia that the Judge was the winner.

many more ceremonies and are far
more powerful than th# "medical "
Their various grade*, like th« others,
are gained by proofs of qualification,
and payment of sums or money. The
: principal festivals aje on the occasion*
! of the planting and digging up of the
yarn*.
These custom*, a* they are called by
the white men, are. respectively. In
November and in the summer; and
during their continuance dances and
ithe consumption of trade gin manifmt
the presence of the Egbo Society; at
! there times they have been known to
kill people In the bush, probably with
the object of furnishing corpses for
furthering their black magic rites

word!
The idem of the Kgbo Society wears
a black vivard made of wood with
holes pierced for the eyes, and two
horns rise forward; he Is dressed ybp
a-ple In rough bamboo matting and
haa a bell fastened to hla side, which
rings aa he goes along; in his left
hand in a bunch of green leaves of a
particular plant; and In his right 1* an
enormous cowhide whip, with which
he flogs those whom he meets. Very
secret idols arc kept in the house* of
the members and In Ihcir Ju-Ju hous
wt; some of them aro Janus-faced
heads, the faces of which are painted
white, the fetich color, and are cu
riously carved with double chins and
double foreheads. The eyes are made
of tin let Into the wood and the tattoo
marks are embossed on the forehead
and on the sides of the cheek near the
ear and painted on the rest of the
cheek.
Some of Ihe heads have a couple of
double black horns curving both wii?»;
others merely have a little black hat.
The heads stand on small pedestals,
and with their white color and grin
ning teeth look very wierd and ghast
ly; a Spanish servant in Grand Canary
when he saw them in the room declar
ed that they were devils. No, we said,
