Mr. Mark Lovuit Pled at City Hospital
Today.
Mr. Mark Lovett, of Btanley, Striven

city hospital from the effects'of a gun
ahot wound received about a week ag
Mr. I.ovett. who was only 16 years
oTii. was a young farmer of Striven
county. On Friday laal he was acci
dentally shot, the wound taking effect.
In the leg. On Monday he was brought
to Ihr hospital for better medical ad
vantages. Wood poison, however, had
set In and he was bcyoucMwtlp. He lin
gered until 6 o'clock this morning,
when he passed quietly away.
The remains have been embalmed
and will probably be shipped to Stan
ley tomorrow for burial.
SOUTHERN SPURS.
Held Their Regular Heetlng Last
Evening.
The Southern Spurs held their regu
lar meeting in their club rooms last
evening. The regular business rou
tine was gone through wllh. but no
thing of special importance was trans
acted.
This club is composed of many of
the best young men of Augusta and Is
a yource of great pleasure to the mem

Many Have Heard Nothing From
Their Son*.
Many of the parents of young men
now In the United States army tn Cuba
are quite uneasy about their sons.
This feeling has been among them for
a good w hile, but was especially in
creased yesterday, when so many let
ters were received telling of the great
amount of sickness among the men.
Several of the parents have not heard
from their sons since their departure.
They are awaiting the arrival of the
next mall and if nothing is heard
will telegraph to ascertain the trou
ble.

Mr. floss Dead.
Many of Augusta's citizens remember
with pleasure the time when Mr. Cm
Moss wa* a conductor on the Georgia
railroad, and will be grieved to hear
or his death. Mr. Moss died yester
dav of typhoid fever at hla home in
Gainesville. His remains will be
Interred In Woodville, Ga., this after
noon.

Treasure From the Oquendo
Washington. Oct 14. The navy;
department will place on rale In New
York a quantity of Spanish money.;
gold and paper, found on the Spanish
armored cruiser Almlrante Oquendo, j
The money wu3 damaged by exposure
to salt water and heat and is valuable!
principally to relic collectors. It was
In the treasure chest of the Oquendo
that the gold and bills were found.
A diver who had been working on the j
wreck of the cruiser disappeared and,
was finally located In Santiago. H#|
was drunk at the time and told those,
who had arrested him for desertion
from the navy that he had diseoverou
the treasure cheat In the forepeak of
the Oquendo. Another diver was
sent down, but he did not discover the
chest for several days. The chest was ;
opened when brought to the surface,
and found to contain 10,000 gold pieces I
of the denomination of 25 pesetas, ia j
all 150,000, and 30.000 notes of ihe
Bank of Spain of various denomina
tions.
The proceeds of the sele of this ;
money will be turned into Ihe United
States treasury.
The bottom of the Pacific between
Hawaii and California is said to be
so level that a railroad could he laid
for five hundred miles without grad
ing anywhere. This fact was' discov
ered by the United 'States surveying
vessel engaged in making soundinss
